How do Alley Oops work during game? (With Ps2)

Postby tsunamisurfer on Mon May 02, 2005 1:08 pm

Hi all,

I have just started playing NBA Live 2005 recently with PlayStation 2 on Superstar setting.

I have A LOT of Q's regarding this game but I hope most will be answered once I applied the suggestions from the Sliders Sticky.

At the moment the game is VERY hard, I am getting spanked by 30-40 points a game and it is not enjoyable.

The first Q that springs into mind, that is not covered by the sticky, is alley oops during the game.

I always play at centre, something I can only fantasize about unless I play in the midgets league.

How do I finish alley ooops?

I can get the guard to pass to me at the right time and place but I ALWAYS miss it.

Is there something that I should do/press as the receiver of alley oops?

Help would be grealt appreciated.

Regards

On Superstar difficulty your players tend to miss more alley-oop attempts, both misfiring on passes and missing the dunk attempts themselves. You can try turning up the Dunk Percentage slider, though the best method is simply knowing when to throw an alley-oop.

Because they're rather low percentage on Superstar, you need to be a bit more selective about when to attempt one; the receiver has to be pretty open, have enough room to move towards the hoop without ending up behind the backboard.

I only get at least one successful alley-oop in a game in Superstar mode (default sliders); one player game. Sometimes I have none. Most alley oops work when in a 2 vs. 1 situation during a fast break. Jason Terry even makes a dunk, alley-ooped by Jerry Stackhouse in that situation.

Last season, when the Mavs were very low on defense, my friend (Memphis Grizzlies) often alley-oops on me. He knows that the Mavs' defensive rating in NBA Live 2004 was so low that even if I play man-to-man defense, the power forwards and small forwards are having an alley-oop fest on me.

If I have player lock on Center, when do I press for the Guard (or ball-handler at the time) to alley-oop the ball? Then is there an optimum time for me to dunk it? What do I press?

Whenever someone is driving to the net or has his hand up for the pass etc... press the alley oop button when he's about to catch it or catches it press the dunk button.... doesn't work all the time as the ball pops out sometimes which is retarded lol

the best time for an ally-oop in superstar is when a good dunker, or a terrible dunker is close to ring (not too close though) and has a free run towards the ring

a good dunker will get it in, whilst a bad dunker will miss the dunk. a terrible dunker will simply lay-up the ball, and has a higher chance of getting it in.

also make sure the passer has a good pass rating

If you're playing for center, I suggest you try posting up against your defender. You can try for an ally oop if your center is actually behind your defender (meaning you are closer to the basket than he is) since well if you do it right, your guard will lob it higher than your defender can get at it and all your center does is get away from your defender.

Note though that posting up will not guarantee you that position so only try to ally oop whenever you can. May be you should try doing the ally oop in an easier setting and try it out in a pick up game in "Play Now" so you can try to see how it works for you. If you don't have that position, then may I suggest doing the "Power Post-Up" move? If you're playing in superstar mode I'm sure you've seen the CPU doing this against you (granted that the guy who does this is rather strong). It'll help you more down low than having an ally oop thrown to you..good luck!
