How much can you offer when you're over the cap?

In year 2, I was able to sign Stacey Augmon to a one year deal worth $1.1m, but I couldn't sign Austin Croshere to a $3.42m deal.

Does anyone know exactly how much you can offer someone when you're over the cap?

It depends on how many years the player has spent in the league. Augmon, for example, has been in the league for quite a time. This raises his minimum salary to 1.1m. If you try to sign a rookie or first year player, the minimum will be way lower (around 300.000). You can always sign players for the minimum, no matter if you're over the cap. They have to agree to the contract, of course.

austin croshere for 3.42 mil? it's a good thing you didn't sign him. Cause he's not worth that much. I wouldn't even sign him for the minimum...

Ok, if being able to only sign minimum salary's, how did the New York Knicks get a payroll of 80M? Are you talking about you can only sign minimum in the season or something?

the Knicks just signed too many free agents of their own, ie no limit to how much you can sign them. The knicks are in a huge mess right now, and i don't think Isah Thomas is a good GM. I never liked him as a player either.

You will not be able to sign a superstar or even a solid player for the minimum during offseason. Which is only reasonable. The rule is: you have cap space, you can sign players. You don't have cap space (which will occur if you re-sign players on overpaid contracts), you don't get to sign players over the minimum salary.

it's seems to vary pretty randomly.. yesterday I couldnt offer chris duhon 870K when I was only 3M over the cap.. other times I'm pretty sure I've signed FAs for as much as 1.10M whilst being further over the cap than 3M

The free agent signing thing should have some sort of an indicator to show when a player is asking for only the minimum offer.

It's not that difficult. Really. In my opinion, the game would be lame without the cap. It adds realism to the game, even if it has some minor flaws. Just take your time and figure it out.

Well I guess I don't hate the salary cap, i hate the GM who got the Lakers with a 70M salary
