Low fps

Anyone help me out? Installed optimal drivers and configured to the lowest(fastest) settings but frame rates are still crappy. I get the best fps at 800x600 and 1024x768 resolution.

Athlon XP 1700+
Asus A7v8x-x mobo
Radeon 9600XT
40GB Maxtor
512MB PC333 memory
WinXP Pro SP1

Is my proc that slow? I think I get a bit lower than 30fps. Very hard to consistently nail perfect release shooting.

that athlon xp 1700+ is really a pentium 3 800mhz equivalent. maybe thats why its crappy :shock:

You can't really compare a Pentium from an Athlon. There are a lot of factors to consider which of the two is better, not to mention the features of the two processors which has an effect on the system's performance. Fox example, if you're going to talk about the processor speed per se, a Thoroughbred core Athlon XP 1700+ runs at only 1467MHz which a Celeron or a Williamette core P4 1.4G can match. Then again, both Intel procs only has an L1 cache of 12KB while the Athlon has a 64KB of L1 cache, plus this proc runs on a 133MHz FSB while the two Intels run at only 100MHz.

Considering these facts, even if this Athlon of his runs only at 1467GHz, given the FSB and the L1 cache, it runs more on 1700GHz.... thus the 1700+.

uhhh no...check your sources again.
a 1700+ is roughly equivalent to a 1.7B Ghz P4.
NEVER go by clock speeds anymore. The fastest gaming cpu's are athlon64's right now and they top out right now at 2.4Ghz (a64 4000+). And yes at that clock speed it absolutely destroys a P4 3.4Ghz cpu at gaming, nevermind a 2.4Ghz P4.
Different cpu architectures..different standards.

And yes the 1700+ is bottlenecking the original poster's system.

anyways i wont argue with your athlons. its way cheaper than pentium and sometimes it works so good, sometimes not so good. i have installed a game(FIFA 2004) at an AMD and a much slower pentium. the much slower pentium excel with both machines having the same cards and memory(only difference are the boards).

maybe because of the boards? :?:

to get back at batangpinoy's problem:

that system should run it fairly smooth man. check for running background services which you don't need. also turn off any instant messengers.

Yeah, it seems that the proc is what holds my system back. I had a 2000+ installed for a short time and it seemed to increase the fps A LI'L BIT.

About TSRs and background services, I think having 1 or 2 running while you're playing doesn't hinder framerates if I have enough memory, in my case, 512MB. But anyway, I disabled ALL of them and still no improvement.

I have many (almost all) experiences w/ other games, wherein using win98 and not the later OSes speeds things up a bit. Is XP that kind of a resource hog or something?

If I'd have the time to test Live in win98, ima update here. But more helpful suggestions are welcome.

Not really, but XP has so much features that an average home user essentially doesn't need.

ok to check for running porgrams in the background go to start menu--run----encode "msconfig" choose startup items then uncheck all other stuff you dont need (Y)

In addition to that, DON'T disable the ff programs/files:

1. load power profiles (it may appear as 2, but DON'T disable any one of them)
2. any antivirus-related (files may start w/ the letters mc*.* or nav*.*).
3. rundll32
4. just in case if you see regscheduler or systray (but i think these are present in older OS versions).

actually i tried having mine with all the items uncheck. works fine. but i think the anti-virus has to stay because you need protection. i was using XP pro. i have these users solely into games where my diskette drives and network configs trun off, then i have this internet user which all the protections and connections turned on lastly i have my workstation user for other programs with only the anti virus running in the background. it's how you preferred your machine to be. try tweaking it but have a good read first for the proper ways and the disclaimer of doing it so. (Y)

Msconfig: it's a good tip, I forgot that.

Hey francis820, I assume your sig is your system, what FPS do you attain w/ that specs? 70 would not surprise me. It'd be heaven if mine can reach that, even 50fps.

W/c do you uncheck in msconfig BTW? Only the services and startup tab? Do you make any more changes in the other tabs? And what about 3rd party non-TSR software (RAMBooster)? Could it improve frame rates? And Vsync when you set the refresh rate at at least 85Hz?

Off-topic: I'm quite annoyed at the engine, preferring left-handed dribbling even on right-handed guys. Not that it alters much of the realism and gameplay, but I don't have a gamepad and I prefer the ball on the right hand when I freestyle non-triplethreat.

I also discovered that IMO there are two distinct perfect release points in high fg rated perimeter shooting. And the delay between those two gets smaller as the player gets taller (or maybe the jump rating). Anyone verify?

How do you check your fps in this game?

I have a really bad PC, well it was good when i bought it in 2000 or 99.

Nividia Geforce2 mx 32mb
Pentium 4 around 1.2 GHZ
256mb RD-RAM
60gb HD
WinXP pro sp2

I run the game at 1024x768 with everything on its highest except I don't have lighting effects (my card doesn't support it :roll:

). And my game runs smoothly, so you shouldn't have a problem.

One thing I would try is to turn off the sound, in other games if I ran a high sound quality it really slowed down the game. This probably isn't the case but could help. In Msconfig i think you just uncheck certain programs in the services and startup tabs. Another thing you could do is to increase your virtual memory. Also if nothing works and you don't want to tune down the setting try powerstrip: http://entechtaiwan.net/util/ps.shtm
*Edit* Just noticed you can only get a demo for powerstrip so try Rivatuner http://www.guru3d.com/rivatuner/ . They have forums there to help you.
Adjusting the settings in there can make a huge differce, but don't overclock too much because you want to keep your card.

Vsync won't boost your framerate.
In fact it'll REDUCE your fps by 1/2 if your system cannot pump out fps as fast as your refresh rate is set at.
If you enable v-sync in nba live you MUST enable triple buffering or else you'll cut your fps in half whenever your system cannot reach your v-sync rate. If tearing doesn't bother you, just leave v-sync off. Less trouble that way.

will i have a medion 4100 1mb l2 cache 800mhz front side bus ...2.8 gigs 512mbs of ram
geforce fx5300 and sometimes my game seems to skip with everything on high and i was wondering if it was something i could do...like whats the diffrence between trilinear bilinear and anotscopic and witch one should i turn on or what is triple buffer or vsync

keep filtering on bilinear and vsync + triple buffer off for the smoothest gameplay.

i haven't had the time to benchmark my framerate in Live but just to give you an idea how my system performs in other benchmarks, i got 6062 points in 3dMark2001 and a score of 42,731 in AquaMark3.
