off ball sucks!!!

I don't know about you but I've tried to elevate my game and bring on some tactics with off ball but either I don't know how to use it or it is totally useless, I tried playing off ball with miller bu even for him it's hard to lose his defender and I found it really difficult to steer reggie so that his defender bounces off the screenm I tried setting picks while off ball, I tried giving tha ball to PG, switching off ball and running into the labe with SG (PF is close to the basket so the pass can be precise but losing the defender and getting open lane is vrtually impossible, even if it happens it's so cozy in the paint that the center or the PF guarding the one passing the ball can easily block the shot, and when it comes to tons of set plays they are completely useless, I came to the point that why try something new when there's no point in doing so, only using pick'n roll seems to make any sense, even if I use basket cut after pick'n roll it's still difficult to execute, I'm desperate to find some optimal set of plays but they don't seem to work, is it my fault or is it just the game that's screwed??

i am of the same mind, it is really hard to do anything more than a pick and roll, maybe ea put this in just for novelty value

example

i was denver and off balled as 'melo, made a huge open run into the paint, alley-ooped with miller who had the ball but he tried to pass it to martin who was miles away from the bucket and of course it went out of bounds!

so i got a bit upset, sue me :)

I disagree. Off-ball for me is some kind of an "emergency button." It is useful when you don't have anyone to pass to and cannot dribble anymore in the post. In this case, you'd press the R3 button and choose a teammate to come near you so that he could bring the ball to the center and set plays again. It is also useful when your defender is calling a full-court press. Since everyone is defended, an off-ball and direct switch is most useful to break the defense.

Yea I hardly ever use it unless its a must, and it pretty much always works for me as long as I perform it right. I like it alot, if you dont like it then dont use it is what I say, use whatever makes you win (Y)

I have a delay from when I hit the button to when the icons come up, and another delay after I select my player. I'd like to use the off-the ball to cut to the basket, but it takes to long to respond (it's fun when it works, though)

I only ever use it for alley-oops. Admittedly I'm yet to actually get one to work :x

yeah, alley oops with off ball are much more difficult to execute than usual one button way, I prefer running my PG around the paint and wait for the PF to cut into the basket and then throw and alley oop pass, I get 50 procent of those, and even if I miss, the ball rattles the rim, with off ball the player won't even catch the ball, as for emergency situations I prefer to keep setting picks because I noticed that off ball takes too much time, and in order to win it takes some threes and turbo+spin+dunk/lay up, I tried this motion 3 set play but the SG never seems to be losing his defender so when he becomes open it is too late for me to pass and shoot, it would be cool if the player could catch the ball midway and keep on running to the 3 ponit line, I really look forward to 2006

I think as far as alley-oops go, maybe that should be one of the play-calling options. I know they have basket cut, but that never does what you want it to... it's the same situation on fast breaks, loads of times I've had guys who could've just run straight to the basket for an alley-oop but didn't, so I end up throwing the ball out of bounds.

Although, I was playing as Dallas today against Charlotte... Dampier was pretty useless with like 2 points and 3 rebounds all game. So I put Podkolzine who was ripping it up on the court for the 4th quarter. Took the ball up with Jason Terry who passed it off to Josh Howard, I backed into Kapono from the 3pt line about a foot in, did a quick spin and tried a fadeaway jumper. It bounced high off the rim into the paint, and Podkolzine comes out of nowhere and dunks it back in with 2 hands. It was pretty nasty, he must've dunked it on 5 or so players from both teams combined.

But yeah, no normal alley-oops :x

yeah, podkolzin is really huge:-) once i was playing this guy online and he made a substitution and when I saw the picture of Podkolzin in this black suit I couldn't stop layghing and I missed my both free throws, but it must've been real nice to have podkolzin nasty put back over 5 defenders :D

It was, I watched the replay of it about 9 times hehe cause it was pretty sweet. He looks bigger than Bradley on the court for some reason, probably the weight thing... he's quite a good shooter from around the key area aswell, he's become my favourite Live '05 guy.. apart from KVH, and because of one dunk lol.

Yea that works everytime, unless you get blocked, which is not very likely to happen

Oopers Loompers are easy to do for me. Just have to start from Free Throw Line when on Offball since they need there gathering then jump. Too bad most teams dont havea a good PG and SG that can do dunk combo (Like Houston  ).

BUt Offball is easy in 1 on 1 and In game for me on Sujperstar. Specially in 1 on 1 (Throw from FreeThrow and Beyond and it bounces off backkboard and Run up, "S" Or Layup/Dunk BUtton and Theyll Smash back down.)

I know you cant hardly get a self-alley oop off when your being guarded
And when I finally get a fast break where I am able to do it, I always forget

I'm kind of the same. I find that Off-Ball Control can be exploited a little too much, so I really only use it when I have to. Like the CPU's ability to make leaning threes out of a double team or the pro-hop in NBA Live 2004, it's the high percentage move that you can go to when you really need or want the win and all else has failed or proved to be inconsistent.

I tried this move with isolating PG and setting SG into off ball and going around the PG and sriving into the lane and it works most cases and the best are the ones that leave the defender on the PG but it's really difficult to run around PG so precisely that the defender is left behind
