Cap space..... if your team is negative like 10 mill.... that means ur in the hole 10 mill..... from ur team salary cap........ when you do trades.... you can't trade with teams over there cap as well.... in order to trade....
when both negative........ you gotta trade for people.......that add up to around the same salary..... example....

anthony - 10 mill.....
lebron - 12 mill......

u have to trade another player with a salary of 2 mill....to equal lebron......
get it?

But you don't even get it.

The salary cap is a limit of the amount of yearly slaries you can carry on your roster. The NBA has the softest cap in all of sports, as you are allowed to be way over the limit. Each team is allowed a certain amount each offseason to sign players, which is called an exception(usually mid-level), even if you are already over the limit. As well, you are allowed to resign any player on your team, even if it puts you even further over the limit.

When trading, the difference in salaries must have a 20% difference or less. I don't know where that guy got the salaries of LeBron and Carmelo, becasue this year Lebron will earn $4,320,360, and Carmelo gets $3,471,360, so the difference in salaries is -0.19651140182762547565480654389912, meaning that this trade could theoretically be done, but just barely.

I just used 10 and 12 to help him understand....instead of the complexety of the real ones...

but you also said that that deal could not be done, as you thought the salaries both had to add up to $12 mil, when in fact, if it was $12 for $10 mil, the deal would work.

so...

so my team has salary cap of -20M and the team i wanna trade with has salary cap of -10. The player i wanna buy from them is worth 9M, what do i have to do to complete the deal?

i dont know much about basketball so bear with me on this one.

Sun Dec 12, 2004 9:39 am

get players to add up to around 9M or if they have no room on their team trade that 9M player plus like a 1M guy and then trade from ur team like a 4M and 5M or something like that

i think i get it

So basically the two trades between the teams have to be about the same value right? Also, what does it mean when they tell you to clear some cap space. How do you clear cap space?

Again, bear with me if i sound stupid. I dunno jack about basketball.

They dont have to be equal, there can be a difference of 20%.

You clear cap space by trading for expiring contracts and not resigning the players, for example, trading a $10 mil player for another $10 mil player, but the one you traded for only has one year left on his contract, therefore, by not resigning him, you clear $10 million of cap room.

Are things like the mid-level exception included in Live 2005?

I have the problem that it is nearly impossible to sign a good free agent because of no salary cap space. The only team which can sign players at the beginning is charlotte.

Tue Dec 14, 2004 6:21 pm

no there are no salary exceptions

Tue Dec 14, 2004 6:46 pm

It's a shame. :(

So the only way to sign free agents is to clean up the roster?
Yesterday I tried to find the salary.txt file with which you could edit the salary cap in previous Live versions but I can't find the file. Does somebody know how to edit cap limit in Live 2005?
