Getting back on defense

How do you get back to cover the break? It says in the manual to tap button 7 on the Dual Action gamepad. It doesnt seem to work for me.
Any suggestions? Is there a certain defense to play that helps with this?

Manually tapping the button changes your player to the last man back, or the player farthest away from the ball and closest to the basket you're defending.
