BIRDIE BOARD: liveGMC.com is back on track!

Sat Nov 13, 2004 6:19 am

As it seemed like the 2005 Dynasties are going in full force, it appears to be the best time to introduce:

the BIRDIE BOARD 2005!

So, basically:
Instead of giving a stat line (ie 28 points, 10 rebound, 4-9 from the field) The birdie formula computes all that into one single number to determine the 'value' of that player's performace. A Birdie Breakdown is simply the list of the players on your team and their value and sorted to most valuable to least.

For those of you who are relatively new to the Birdie system:
Birdies defined by ESPN.com:
Birdies, for the uninitiated, are the end product of a formula Larry Bird devised long ago to quantify a player's contribution to overall team success. Bird likes to add a player's points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocked shots ... and then subtract his missed shots, missed free throws, personal fouls and turnovers ... and then divide the total by the number of games played.

For those of you who are relatively new to the Birdie board:
Each participating Dynasty GM submits their pstat file to me(for now) and the file is computed to obtain the team's overall Birdie rating as well as each of the players. THEN, an equalizing system cross checks for unrealistic/inflated stats. A final score is tabulated and posted on the Birdie Board.
(For some previous examples, click here)
(To view more information on the Penalty System, click here)

:?: REQUEST:
Please help create some early excitement! Please send me your unaltered PLAYER STATS text file when you reach:

28 game season: (required games to complete)
 midseason: 15-18  End: 29
58 game season: (required games to complete)
 1/4 season: 15-18  Midseason: 29-35  3/4 season: 44-47  End: 58 games

 1/4 season: 21-25  Midseason: 41-49  3/4 season: 61-65  End: 82 games

For now, please sent your pstat file to: honorglow@livegmc.com

- Click "Save Stats"
- pstat***.txt will be located in the playerstats folder in the NBA Live 2005 folder within My Documents folder

Additional comments: I'm extremely excited to see how this year's 2005 Dynasties rate and to see who out there has the most realistic dynasty, statistically speaking of course. I feel that I have just touched the tip of the iceberg so far in terms of the potential this project has, so if anybody has any suggestions or feedback, please let me know. Also, I'm pretty "layout and visually"-challenged, so if anybody can help me out in any aspect(ie those who seem to have a good grasp at Photoshop), I'd love to hear from you!

Oh yes, I forgot to mention...you DO NOT have to have a Dynasty posted on this thread(or at .org) to participate. As long as you're playing on the PC and playing Dynasty mode...YOU QUALIFY to participate!

Thanks PropulsionDJ for pointing out that possible miscommunication.

Sat Nov 27, 2004 3:07 am

Okay, I updated the Birdie Board to include the two most recent additions to the board. Thanks Sit and NBA_Baller_50! Congrats to Sit's Laker Dynasty currenty ranking #1 in the early season.

NEEDING FEEDBACK:
Match 66 had mentioned to me that this year's Live is leaning toward more higher scores than years past. If this is a common trend for other Dynasty GM's out there, I'D really like to know. The reason is, I may adjust the buffer system to adjust to this tendency.

Anyway: Keep those pstats coming! also check out Team MVP Live Cards : HERE

Hey mike879, thanks for your interest! I'm looking forward to your pstat file! Just curious, what about the Birdie Board is it that you don't understand? The reason why I ask is I think one of the reasons why it isn't as popular as it can be is that I have a hard time explaining the whole concept in a short concise explanation that won't bore 'Dynasters' so my current explanation may have turned people off or was so lengthy they moved onto something else.

For anybody who has previously participated, and has a good way with words, can somebody explain this project in one concise paragraph? If so, I'll give you credit where credit is due and also use your explanation on the actual website.

As you may have noticed, I have a way with numbers but not necesarilly a way with words...

Sat Nov 27, 2004 9:14 am

I think everyone understands the basic concept...and how the birdie number is calculated, they just don't understand what is good and what is bad.

Maybe a better explanation of this would help. I understand better than most but I'm still farily hazy on the whole thing.

Sat Nov 27, 2004 9:30 am

THANKS SO MUCH! Donatello…this weekend I'll spend some time making a comparison chart of real life NBA players…ie a ALL-STAR, starter, a 6th man, a bench warmer, and perhaps somebody who shouldn't even be in the league.

Can you guys give me some good examples? ..other than Allstar and starter? those are easy to figure out..

Sat Nov 27, 2004 5:52 pm

MVP: KG
All-Star: Kobe
Starter: Mike Miller
Sixth Man: Earl Boykins
Bench Warmer: Mark Madsen

Thats just one possible selection of players

Sun Nov 28, 2004 4:33 am

Sit's selection there is pretty good, but I think the line between KG and Kobe is a bit thin. Perhaps:

MVP-Kevin Garnett
All-Star-Richard Jefferson
Starter-Mike Miller
Sixth Man-Earl Boykins
Bench Warmer: Mark Madsen

Sun Nov 28, 2004 6:41 am

above choices are good but i post mine so you can have more option

MVP-Tim Duncan
All-Star-Shaq O'Neal
Starter- Allen Iverson
Sixth Man: Bobby Jackson
Bench Warmer: Darko? Shawn Bradley

not trying to offend anyone, just discussing :)

i think that the line is pretty thin between duncan, shaq, and iverson...those are all really top-tier players, there isn't much comparison between them....this needs to be solid steps between ranks of players.

MVP- One of the best
All-Star- great player
Starter- good player
6th man- good player, limited minutes
bench warmer- duh

I like the bobby jackson selection, though (Y)

okay, to give you a REAL LIFE NBA PLAYER COMPARISON CHART:

Image

I agree with Donatello that there is a fine-line between MVP and All-Stat that's why I took the MVP stats for the player the year he earned MVP.
Also NOTE: We need more great examples so please keep them coming! The more examples, the better things average out.

(Micchy Boy, I forgot to put Darko in, oops, I'll put him in in the next installment!)

remember:
MVP:
All-Star: (somebody who's never won MVP before)
Starter: (somebody who's never been an All-Star but always starts for team)
Sixth Man:
Bench Warmer:

Okay, given Micchy's vote, here's an update:

REAL LIFE NBA PLAYER COMPARISON CHART:
(as determined by NLSC members)

Awesome! Now Can at least two more people cast me their opinions and give me some players? This way the 'law of averages' will come into fold...

remember-
MVP:
All-Star: (somebody who's never won MVP before)
Starter: (somebody who's never been an All-Star but always starts for team)
Sixth Man:
Bench Warmer:

...now back for the Christmas Season!

...from the annals of the 2005 Birdie Project: (info)
paradizecityz's Cavaliers 2004-05 mid-season Birdie Breakdown:

Image

So, the sophomore James edges out his NLSC baller teammate E. Nguyen, taking midseason team MVP honors with a weighted Birdie score of 31.99- and his 'reversible' Live Card is enabled.

'reversible Live Card preview':

So out of nowhere..:
This Dynasty is currently ranked #1 on the 2005 Birdie Board.
(Quite the accomplishment among all the other solid Dynasties!)

For the complete 'Birdie Breakdown' AND to see James' ' reversible' Live Card click here.

paradizecityz: Thanks for contributing to the Birdie Board...and I'll be playing online against you soon here. Let me know when you finish the season please send me that pstat file! Congrats on being #1!

Mon Dec 27, 2004 2:00 pm

nice update Honor....

I'm hoping some people start to knock off some of those Laker chumps (Kobe, Lamar, etc) off the top of the MVP and dynasty spots :D

Mon Dec 27, 2004 2:19 pm

...oh yeh, I forgot...

.: LiveDynasty.com Update :.
 added Top Ten Team MVPs. 12.26.04

I'll be posting the Top Three here on NLSC and then 'bait' all of you, I'll list the remaining 10 to the LiveDynasty site.

The X wrote:nice update Honor....

Thanks for the Compliments, X. Yeh, for as much as the Lakers are hated on NLSC it does appear that the Laker dynasties are the ones who are participating on the Birdie Board. My one hope is that NLSC players we'll starting topping the Team MVP charts and so they'll want to design their own Live Cards.

Mon Dec 27, 2004 2:25 pm

yeah, maybe my own guy (who is projected a 2nd Rder in my Bobcats dynasty for the '05/06 season) and is a Fred Hoiberg-type can climb up the rankings

btw, did you get those okafor snaps I took?
