where's the gripes section?

Mon Nov 08, 2004 7:14 am

just wondering why there's no gripes section for all the gripers out there? i know some people gotta vent, at least i know i do :D

took the words right out of my mouth! I wanted to bitch about this game a little, so now I'm hi-jacking your thread because I feel bad making a new one! :D

This game could be so much better! First off, my courts are black. Game runs fine, except for the courts. I just have that shitty onboard graphics card but damn, every year I've run live without an aftermarket graphics card and every year it has been fine. I turn down the graphics if need be, so long as the game runs. I played Live 2000 for the most part with no crowds, and all the settings on low because I had a shitty comp. The gameplay was good and so it didn't matter. Now I can't see the lines!

The game play is very average anyway. To all those 13 year olds who pushed for the all-star weekend, while others (read: people who know what they're talking about) wanted improved gameplay, a big thank you! We now have that marvelous all-star weekend where players kick the ball off a camera and then do a 360 through the legs dunk. This is what basketball is about right! Oh and the 3 point shoot out... this is revolutionary stuff, so completely different from what they had several years ago. Thank god they brought it back!

In the mean time, the gameplay has 0, that's 0 flow. The spacing is terrible, the court is overcrowded. The animations have 0 flow also, they're choppy like Live 95. And I don't mean frame-rate choppy, I mean another kind of choppy: as somebody once put it, players seem to have downs syndrome. The movement is terrible. Passes and catches are terrible, and resemble no FLOW. You can't catch and shoot because every player needs 5 seconds to catch the ball and gather himself on the perimeter. When you bring the ball up, the defence is so tight your player brings the ball up backwards and keeps bumping into the defender like a fly trying to get through glass. He is crouched over and ice-skating sideways and backwards and shit. Nba live 03 flowed better than this. Even the rebounding animations suck. Where's the grace an NBA player has when he beats a defender in the back court pushing the ball up like a damn gazelle!?!?

The other faults with the game can generally be fixed with sliders and so on, but how do you fix all this other annoying shit? You can't.

I generally like the shooting animations and the "swish" this year is probably the best we've had. Franchise mode has some nice details this year though it can get annoying if you're simming.

The game play has taken a step back and it's because so many people lost sight of the most imortant aspect of the game! I haven't griped like this since live 2001. I don't want to be one of these bitter assholes who gripe about every aspect of the game. But you guys know I've been around and played this game long enough to know that if I'm bitching about it, I genuinely am not too happy with the game. I'd still play it if the courts weren't black. Now I search for other options... :)

hoyyyyyyyyy lets make use of this thread, jesus stevan that was some venting right there

what i dont like:

- it seems like everyone shrunk a foot this year.. didn't think graphics were a big deal but imo they went downhill
- the swishes are real nice.. i get a good kick outta hitting an open j, but i think its kinda stupid how it swishes when you dunk the ball
- overcrowding arghhhhhhh
- another thing: you can drive uncontested to the basket but if someone from the other team touches you just a little bit you get called for a charge. fshlahfkldshgklhklhkls&!%(&@!!!

stevan pretty much covered everything else, especially the animations. i returned the game after 3 days :( .. don't get me wrong, i'm a big fan of the live series.. i've been playing it since 95, but this year just didn't appeal to me.. i had to hop off this bandwagon and jump on the espn one this year.. hopefully it'll be better next year :?

LOL! That was a hilarious post. I'm glad you really emphasized the terrible gameflow, because that's my biggest gripe right now. I really think EA put that there purposely so that the "defense" would look good. Which brings me to another question... how could EA not notice this:

Understatement of the year!

P.S. Better do something about the centers who catch a lob pass and find himself out of bounds. That happens at least once a game.

Like the console section, I figured that it wasn't really necessary. The gripes section came about as a result of the negative reviews of NBA Live 2001. Anyone who dared to admit to enjoying the game was labelled an EA ass kisser and needlessly flamed; thus, the gripes section was created to provide an area for venting, leaving the general section for calmer reviews and (as the name implies), general issues with the game.

Attitudes are a little different these days and as a lot of people simple bypass the gripes section anyway (as they do with the console section), I figured we'd just try having the one big section again this year. If need be I'll create more sections but for now, I think keeping everything that doesn't belong in one of the other sections here in General Issues should be fine.

The general consensus between my friends is that this is the best live ever. And we aren't kids. (we're in our 20s) And I hate all that flashy stuff too. I don't know if 5 days were enough to get you into the game, plus a lot of sliders were probably not released then. I really don't get why you think it's worse than 2004. This is a lot better than 2004 for sure. I really don't get the negative comments. It really really puzzles me. And this is a person that has been disgusted at every single NBA Live since 2001.

dynasty mode= much better
all star weekend= rocks

but give me live 2004 with these 2 features anyday.

Tue Nov 09, 2004 10:33 am

I disagree. Live 2004 was a dunk fiesta. I scored with dunks almost every single shot whereas this game makes me rely more on mid range jumpers.

Tue Nov 09, 2004 10:36 am

yeah, i am a bad judge on stuff like that because i don't really play an nba style. i like a fast moving game.

There is more of a tendency to take jump shot attempts in this game, but I find it just as easy as Live 2004 to get dunks. I figured out the post game and I can beat my man or find position for an easy dunk. Another nice way is to drive down the lane and dish it off to a big man or anyone near the net.

It's true that Live 2005 improves in a lot of areas, but it's the poor passing, movement, and blockfest that really hurts the game.

Andrew cursed. That's something new. Not being a smartass, just never heard you curse before.

Tue Nov 09, 2004 5:08 pm

It's far from the first time I've used any kind of profanity (though "ass" is pretty tame these days) in this forum or the old one so it's not new. I simply don't make a habit out of it.

Tue Nov 09, 2004 5:19 pm

gripe:

why is there a few seconds in which you can't inbound the ball? you can't press it immediately, you have to wait a few moments...is there a reason for this that i'm missing? and i know it's not slow PC or anything because it's the same on gamecube, and i played it on xbox, same thing.

Tue Nov 09, 2004 5:35 pm

It's been in every NBA Live. It basically represents the time in which the referee is handing the ball to the player to inbound.

Tue Nov 09, 2004 5:38 pm

no, believe me, i play a very run and gun game, and on live 2004, there wasn't this kind of pause there. it's not REALLY long, but it's a moment more at least than there ever has been before (live 95 on genesis, live 96, 97 on snes, live 2000 on n64, live 2003 on playstation, live 2004 on pc)

Wed Nov 10, 2004 12:58 am

It wasn't there in 2004, but that wasn't a good thing because you could inbound the ball before anyone got back on defense, so it's good that it's there.

In real life you can't just go inbounding the ball like that unless it's after a mad shot, but on a foul or out of bounds you have to wait for the ref.

Wed Nov 10, 2004 8:04 am

oh, yes, i totally agree that it's unrealistic. but thank you for agreeing with me that it's there
