Talk about NBA Live 2005 here.
Fri May 13, 2005 11:04 pm
Im playin a lil Denver Dynasty at the moment, and have some problems.
I need someone who can guard players like Lewis or VC.
Dermarr Johnson´s just too slow has some block skills but isnt a real tough defender.
Voshon Lenard, well n/c, just no def.
And Andre Miller ( I play him as a shooting guard sometimes, hes fast and a great slasher) is just to small, gives the opponent a mismatch all the time.
So i wanna ask who do u think is the best SF-SG defender in the game?
Would be nice if u would also name some low rated players, its only about defense, cuz my cap is about - 4 Mill and i dont want to trade my best players.
Ty for replies

Tayshaun Price is a good defender, and is a 71 rating. Also try someone like Bruce Bowen, Ron Artest.
Fri May 13, 2005 11:13 pm
well theyre quite xpensive to get.
I dont have lot options it would be the best if the players contract would be around 1-2 mill. And he shouldnt be too highrated, I am not able to offer very good players only between 50-60....
But thx, maybe some nice moves for the offseason, but im at the start with negative salary.

Then your in some trouble. But, you really don't need lock down defenders in Live, all you have to do is play smart defense with DeMarr or whoever, just stay in front of the offensive player, challenge shots, and if your defending someone off the ball, get in the passing lanes and if they make a pass your guy, hit the steal button and you could intercept the pass. Playing D is not very hard, geez, I've been able to keep teams under 70 points for like 5 games in a row.
Fri May 13, 2005 11:23 pm
Hmmm, Steals and blocks are not the prob ( i think blocks are just overpowered ... even if u do slider to 0 )
It´s just.., well hear this one:
I played the Bobcats and did quite good but there was no chance to defend Jason Kapono. He nailed one after another. And I cannot leave Okafor alone in the post so I have to stay under the basket with K-mart and Camby.
So I lost to the Bobcats with around 10 points and I am not that bad just ripped down the Spurs with 8, cuz they have no big shooter.
The sickest one is Rashard Lewis, hes just too big and has a very nice shot.
/e: what team u play and what are ur key-defenders ?

All you can do is challenge the shot. If it goes in, it goes in, there's nothing you can do. Just challenge the shot. Jumping to block the shot instead of just standing there with arms up is the best way to affect the shot.

Well Im gonna try my best and maybe I will get anyone better, I´m thinking of some taller guys like Jeffries or Bender... Bender should be a good one maybe ?
plz read my edit above

I like the athletic swingmen as defenders who always have speed and quickness to stay in front of opponent....
examples are Gerald Wallace, Mikael Pietrus, Desmond Mason....

Thats my prob.
Player Athletic Defense skills Height
Lenard NEVER NO NEVER
Johnson NO OK YES
Miller OK YES NEVER
Ratings: YES=A OK=B NO=E NEVER=F
And Melo is my break player he shouldnt be too much bothered by defense.
So maybe youre right, i should try to get such a swingmen and then im gonna give him some defense training lessons till hes a defense beast.

yeah, that's how I use either my SF or SG in my starting lineup, as a defensive stopper....
I did originally have Gerald Wallace and he was very handy....I now have Bobby Simmons, who is probably a slightly better defender than Wallace but nowhere near as athletic....

Get Josh Smith

just too highrated i think i wont get him.
My try is this one, plz say what u think about:
The Nuggets trade Earl Boykins and Francisco Elson to Memphis.
Dahntay Jones and R. Humphrey gonna play for Denver.
I plan to train Jones´ defensive skills.
He´s really athletic. All around 70 in jump, quickness and speed.
He´s also a good slasher and has a solid mid range shot. A quite talented player and 6´6.
opinions plz
Sat May 14, 2005 12:24 am
nah, I think you can get Jones cheaper than that....try elson and a scrub or elson and a 2nd rounder for jones....I wouldn't give up lil Earl....

DerMarr Johnson's height is an asset in challenging shots. he's too weak to defend in th epost though, so if it comes to that just double team and rush out to challenge the open man if he gets the ball open... works for me...
Sat May 14, 2005 12:39 am
Another thing would be trading Nene but I´m not down with that, cuz hes my back up C/PF and can turn around a game with his low post game....
Sat May 14, 2005 12:50 am
nah, don't trade Nene....he's a 6th man in my dynasty and is great....you can probably package some of the other bench guys to get the player you are looking for....

I won´t, im not crazy. unfortunately the Grizzlies dont wanna trade draft picks....
/e: well, this one worked, but J-Will was injured (I simulated cuz i didnt want to load every time a trade didnt work):
DerMarr Johnson, Luis Flores for D. Jones and R. Humphreys.
So I will w8 a bit and maybe J-Will gets injured (next game vs Grizzlies

) and then this is a great deal, aint it ?
P.S. it´s fair for both teams, Flores is very good. When Miller was injured he stepped up off the bench and did quit well, a good stealer and passer.

get battier.

put your roster here...
but if I were I would change my small forward (likely carmelo anthony) and put him to defend the shooting guards (kobe, t-mac, lebron)... usually the other teams have good shootings and do not have good smalls (caron butler, jimmy jackson and l. jackson)
they are good players, but they dont make infiltrations as many as KOBE, t-mac or lebron... so they are easier to defend...

well thats what im gonna try, u mean in the defensive matchup screen i suppose.
I hope J-Will will get injured (not that nice i know, but would be fine) so that i can at least get Jones.
But I would like more opinions about good defenders.
Just what you think, not the ratings.
Ty for many replies.

try snatching SG Ira Newble from Cleveland, he's pretty cheap at around 1.60m. He has the height for an SG (6'7") nad can defend well, the only problem i find is his speed and quickness is only decent and he's never an offensive threat. If you're willing to sacrifice his flaws then he would do fine.

Thx im gonna try him in a lil indivdual practice and look at his ratings and how i culd trade him.
thank you, that´s what i am lookin for, cheap low rated players.
/edit: Dermarr Johnson for Ira Newble
I hope youre right, and that he can help us.
His ratings are ok (quickness and speed around 65-height 6´5"-and defense abilities are ok, and im gonna train them)
thank you for your help

You just aren't going to be able to stop VC or Lewis with a guy in his 50s.
But if you want to match their athleticism to at least slow down those dunks/drives, you might consider:
Travis Outlaw (portland):
6' 9" / 56 overall
90 jump, 68 speed, 61 quick, 90 dunk, 63 block.
Boris Diaw
6' 8" / 58 overall
90 Defensive Awareness, 68 speed, 73 quick, 79 jump

thx, I tried to get diaw but theres no chance at the moment.
Maybe an offseason-move.

I held down Kobe Bryant to about 15 points using DeShawn Stevenson, Kedrick Brown and J.R. Smith at different times. I also held Ray Allen scoreless for the first half of my game with J.R. Smith as well, so all of those players do not have high defensive ratings, but as long as you can recognize the computers pattern on offence you can make it look like you played good d on them.
