I downloaded roster updates but....?

okay im new to this forum, i downloaded the new rosters patch hurraayyy, but then i tried to play online and the rosters wont appear there, its the same old puny ones ea provided. i asked somebody and they told me about these updates(which i never knew), now im stuck with the updates only in single player mode not online, can anyone instruct me how to play with rosters updates online????
