Game crashes (Geforce 4 graphics card)

Postby Nova_Nowitzki on Tue Dec 21, 2004 7:05 am

Hi,

I have recently bought NBA Live 2005 but it keeps crashing before I can start a game or any other game mode. The game loads normally and I can change settings etc. but it ceashes whenever I try to play a game (it goes back to the Windows desktop).

I have a modern laptop which fulfils the system requirements and I have even installed the latest Geforce drivers (November 2004) but it doesn't work! Please help!

This is my system:

Toshiba Satellite 2430-402
Intel Pentium 4
2.53 GHz
256+256 MB DDR RAM
Geforce 4 420Go (32 MB RAM)
Windows XP

I have tried to change all kinds of details settings and resolutions. I have even set details settings to 'low'!

I would be extremely grateful if you could provide help.

Best wishes,

when it crashes to windows, does it display any error messages or it just goes directly to windows? also have you installed any patches lately cuz maybe one of those could be corrupt and cause a crash? hmm ur vid card is kinda weak but i guess it does meet requirements but then again ur using a laptop...

Thank you for your reply.

There is no error message when it crashes back to the desktop. Haven't installed any patches for NBA yet.

Are you aware of any patches or drivers that might help?

I updated the drivers only after I had noticed that the game keeps crashing. In fact, I now have the old drivers again and the same crash happens. The game actually supports Geforce4 so I really don't know why the game crashes all the time. Can there be any other explanation? Are there other people with similar problems? Are there any patches?

Thanks.

Hello,

I although using a Geforce 4 graphic card and I had almost the same problems as you. The game starts up and when I want to go to action than it crashed.

I used the 66.93 driver from nvidia and all EA Games (Fifa 2005, NHL 2005 and NBA 2005) I have crashed or had serious graphic problems.

So I installed a new driver form the beta driver section which is named 67.03. After the installation all EA Games are running without crashes.

This is the link for the german version.

@Nova_Nowitzki,

Are you sure you have a GF 4 32mb graphics card? (I don't know anything about the internals of the laptop, but does it also have PCI and AGP slots? Is it a PCI or an AGP card? I think all GF 4's are AGP's and have a minimum of 64mb memory.) Have you updated DirectX? The game requirements are:

64 MB graphics card, DX 9 compatible

DirectX 9.0b or c is the advisable version.

I also had that problem in NBA Live 2004. I can load the game. After I got to that loading screen just before the game starts, I am reverted back to Windows. But I was using an S3 built-in video with 32mb shared memory back then. I have a GF FX5200 128mb, 128-bit now. I tried to play the game with ForceWare 66.93 drivers, the problem was gone.

Maybe it could be that your graphics card does not have enough video card memory to play the game. But if it does, then it could just be a driver problem as what others have posted here. Older tweaked drivers may also be of help:

You can find the latest ForceWare beta releases (higher than 66.93) here:

Thanks for all your help. I installed the 66.93 driver and the 67.03 beta version but somehow the driver does not update, i.e. it still says the graphics card uses the old driver. I guess this is because laptops need different drivers and can't use the same as desktop computers?? How do I update the driver on my laptop if that's possible at all?

It's definitely not a DirectX problem (I have DirectX 9c and no problems with it). And the graphics card has 64 MB shared memory. It's an AGP card because it's a laptop. So I don't really know what to do about the problem.

@Nova_Nowitzki,

I think laptops and desktops use the same nVidia ForceWare drivers because there is only one official release from their website.

You may wanna uninstall your old driver first before installing a new one. You can do this through CONTROL PANEL --> ADD or REMOVE PROGRAMS. Then look for NVIDIA Drivers and remove them.
