Blocking experiment with players

Fri Nov 19, 2004 8:04 am

We all know that the block system in Live 2005 is poorly implemented. I have my 4 block sliders (human/cpu) set to 0 and I'm still getting ridiculous and unrealistic block shots in the game. One thing I hate about the blocking is that when you're a 6'6" SG against 6'8" Tracy McGrady, most of the time he will block your shot when you square up. I love the "behind the back" block shots and the ones in the paint, but the jumpshot blocks are getting out of hand.

My suggestion is that we change every single player's blocking attributes in the game through copying and pasting in the players.dbf column for BLOCKING. For example, we can change all the players under 6'4" blocking to 3. Players from 6'5" to 6'8" could have attributes around 15-25. Those who are taller than 6'8" will get attributes such as 45-50.

Of course, the big blockers in the NBA such as Ben Wallace, Yao Ming, and Shaquille O'Neal will all have attributes in the lines of 50-65. I honestly think that giving a player more than 65 will cause him to get unrealistic blocking numbers.

One thing that I'm trying to get rid of is the idea of players such as Shaq (overall 92) going down to an 88 or lower because of bad blocking attributes. We will get around this problem, trust me. I'll find a way to keep overall player ratings realistic while their blocking attributes are held on a better setting.

I'll mess around with these more but this could definitely make the NLSC rosters better. (Y)

I don't have a problem with the blocks. Run pick and rolls and jump into the defender and the number of blocks should decrease quite a bit.

Those are realistic numbers of blocks in the NBA. It's annoying seeing players get 6-7 blocks a game.

Alright, bad news. The blocking in this game is totally f'd up this year and there's no way to fix it. I just set T-Mac's blocking abilities to 0. When I played against him in a 1-on-1, he had 5 blocks. During a real 5-on-5 game, he got 6 blocks.

The blocking this year for jumpshots really gives advantage to taller players. I guess all we can do to counter this is to try fadeaways or leaners.

My fantasy team typically gets ~15-20 bpg. Amare and Dalembert are getting 6.3 and 5 a game respectively. Keon Clark, off the bench with limited minutes, averages 2.8. My sliders for blocking are at 0 as well.

Suggestion, try fooling with the jump rating. What I tried to get rid of 2003's block problems was to minimize the jump rating for all players.(50) Definately hurt the chances for a block, no more 50 inch verticals from a stand still position! Not sure what other problems this might add to the game though.

Something I have noticed is that a PG, like Marbury in my last game, will not take a big to the hole if they are guarding him. He'll just take a jump shot and get blocked.(actually I think that's a big part of the problem) Not so much a problem of physics but AI. :)

The problem with globally decreasing jumping ratings is that it affects dunking, and perhaps more significantly the number of players that are eligible for the dunk contest.

I also set down jumping ratings for every player to reduce blocked shots and it works really well for me. Got numbers from 0 - 8 blocks per game. Sometimes when a team gets hot in the defense they manage to get more than eight - but this happens very rare.
I couldn't notice any deficit in dunking or rebounding. Players dunking a lot are still dunking when they have the opportunity. And let's get serious... how often during a nba game you can see vince carter making a reverse dunk or Fred Jones dunking it in off the backboard ???

So for those of you still getting bothered by too much blocked shots try out and set the jump-ratings down and watch if you still like the gameplay. For me it definitely worked out !!!

Could be that there are deficits in the dunk contest. I can't comment on that 'cause I don't play it very often - just don't forget to make a players.dfb backup !
