I have little trouble with "Sign Free Agent". When I sign cheap players like Rick Brunson (880K) my offer is accepted. But if I want to sign Malone or Mourning (6-10M) my offer is declined because I don't have cap space... Can anybody tell me what I must do, to clear that space and buy one of these players?

You can't clear cap space just like that. If you're over then you're gonna have to drop players and wait till their contract expires.
You might also want to trade to clear some cap space.
If you have the PC version ... you can use DBF editing to sign those guys.

The Bobcats have plenty of space in their first year. If you have some expendable players with big contracts, you might want to try and dump them on the Bobcats in exchange for some cheaper players on one year deals. If the deal heavily favours them, they should accept any offer. It's not the most realistic method, but it is playing by the rules.

though i am into my celts dynasty alot i am still curious to try the bobcats team. basicly play the first year out, see who is worth leaving around, then taking all that cap room and signing all the top free agents. sounds fun to me. though i cant ditch my celts for the cats, no way. so for now they remain my cap dump team.

what's the limit when signing a free agent even without cap space. the highest i got was signing a player worth 1.1M for 1 yr, even if I'm over the cap.

IIRC, you can sign players for the league-minimum salary, which depends on the years in the NBA the guy has. That 1.1M guy was probably a long-time vet.
There are also a couple of different "exceptions" but I don't know if those have been implemented in Live.

The minimum salaries for the 2004-05 season are as follows: Years of
NBA Service Minimum Salary
0 (rookie) $385,277
1 $620,046
2 $695,046
3 $720,046
4 $745,046
5 $807,546
6 $870,046
7 $932,546
8 $995,046
9 $1,000,000
10 $1,100,000
A team that is over the cap may nonetheless always sign player contracts for the minimum salary. In addition, so that teams are not deterred from signing more experienced players because of their higher minimum salaries, any amount payable to a player in excess of the four-year minimum salary amount is subsidized by the league (and does not count toward the team's payroll for cap or tax purposes).
