Morale/Pressure

Postby Raptorel on Fri Aug 06, 2004 8:49 am

When it comes to simulating real-life gaming, the thing that's really missing is the "feel" of the game. That is - the pressure on the court and how well the players feel. So I tought of the following scenarios:

Let's say you're with the Raptors (HOME) playing against LA Lakers (AWAY). You definately have the home-court advantage and this should affect the players morale (increasing their ratings especially in the offensive/defensive awareness). During a hot or cold streak, this should modify accordingly. Like if you got onto a hot streak making 5 consecutive shots the players get pumped up and feel they are invincible, thus increasing their confidence and awareness. Contrary to this, if the opposing team goes on a 12-0 run then they will be unwilling to play, losing their focus so you need to get the bench players in the game, so they can put on the effort and show what they got - you gave them this chance - so this should rise their morale.

On the defensive end, you know that are two main parts in defending, depending on what the offensive player's main attributes are. So, if you guard someone like Dirk Nowitzki (someone who shoots well but it's not an good dribbler) then you would go for a high pressure - this way lowering his shooting precision (if he decides to shoot over you), knowing that he can't rely on his driving to the basket. If you guard someone like Rafer Alston or Iverson, players with good dribble - bad shooting, then you are staying at a somewhat distance giving him the shot - this way reducing his driving capacity.

I think there should be ways for these things to be implemented into the NBA Live.

I feel you on that one raptorel, I see exaclty what you're saying, but what about gaurding someone like KObe or T-Mac, someone who can shoot, dribble and is just ... well ... great all around player, what do you say for that one, high pressure all around or what?

This goes on depending on how well the team-mates are gonna back you up. Just think like a real-life situation. If you know you have Shaq behind you, then you play on T-Mac close so he doesn't shoot and let him drive. This is where Shaq comes and block the shit out of him. If you have "bad" team-mates, then you will need to double-team him imediatelly.

The AI just sucks in my opinion. Once you find a hole in the AI, it's hard to fight the temptation to burn them. For players who play to win, these basketball games suck. EA and Visual concepts lack in the area of putting logic into the AI and that what makes the game more enjoyable and brings you back to play more. I agree with your idea, but games have to get back to the basics.

Yeah I mean the CPU should notice that you're only using Kobe for scoring (example) and double team him etc.

Yeah and regarding this they should add a "leadership" rating. This is common to players who REALLY want to win and thus they are stimulating their teammates. Like if you have Michael Jordan in your team then he has a great leadership and he's making the other players more competitive - increasing their will to win and awareness on the court (they pay more attention to the court since Jordan is raising their morale and confidence).

The same goes with, let's say, Jason Kidd - he has great vision so the players know that if they can get open he will get them the ball. This means they are more willing to get open and travel on the court and move often so therefore the team is more offensive.

You all can think about players with "special abilities" like Ben Wallace - great defensive player - he should increase the other players confidence at the defensive end and inspire them to play defense when he is on the floor. There are numerous situations like these, you just gotta think real-life basketball.

Guys that are playing basketball for real know very well what I'm talking about.

As a point where computer programming comes, I don't think there will be alot of work to do to implement these, instead these additions will make the game jump sky-high, because we are talking REALISM AT IT'S BEST!

I think it should be a 'makes teammates better' rating.. For example if you trade Michael Jordan to Atlanta all of the players are suddenly hall of fame caliber, but if you traded Kobe to Atlanta then.. (N)
