PS2: auto substitition and game freezing 1 min. into game

I'm used to playing NBA Live with auto substitution. But for some reason, I can not find this option on the PS2 format. All I found was the setting for Auto Subs notify.
And one more thing, My game freezes on PS2 1 minute or so after any game starts. This didn't start happening until recently. Is this normal? I don't want to buy a new game just because of that.
Please help?!?!?

Auto subs are now governed by the User Substitution slider. At 0, auto subs are off. Set it to about 50 for realistic substitution patterns.
Sounds like there's a problem with your PS2 or your NBA Live 2005 disc. If you aren't experiencing problems with any other PS2 game, I'd say there are some scratches on your disc.
