3-Point Rating Formula

Postby ParoXsitiC on Sat Jun 25, 2005 11:42 pm

I am trying to design a somewhat accurate formula based on stats.
I am posting two examples in which I want some input on which one you would consider is the better ranking. Please keep in mind that the general numbers are based on high = 95 average = 75 and low = 50. Anyone who did not attempt 50 3's in the 04-05 season won’t be on the list.

These ratings are based on how many attempts he should have realistically if he played all 48 minutes. Then it compares their attempts to a relationship between the league and generates an expected 3P% based on the number of attempts. Their season 3P% is based on their expected 3P% to get a percentage of how well they achieved their expected goal.
Code: Select all
jones damon             96
korver kyle             95
richardson quent        95
marshall donyell        95
davis baron             93
crawford jamal          92
allen ray               92
stojakovic peja         92
lewis rashard           90
arenas gilbert          90
mobley cuttino          90
radmanovic vlad         89
stoudamire damon        89
johnson joe             88
atkins chucky           88
miller mike             87
billups chauncey        87
jackson jim             87
gordon ben              87
vanexel nick            87
jackson stephen         86

These ratings are based on how many attempts per game. Then it compares their attempts to a relationship between the league and generates an expected 3P% based on the number of attempts. Their season 3P% is based on their expected 3P% to get a percentage of how well they achieved their expected goal.
Code: Select all
jones damon           94
richardson quent      94
korver kyle           94
stojakovic peja       92
allen ray             92
johnson joe           92
crawford jamal        91
mobley cuttino        91
arenas gilbert        91
lewis rashard         91
marshall donyell      90
davis baron           90
billups chauncey      88
stoudamire damon      87
atkins chucky         87
miller mike           87
jackson jim           87
radmanovic vlad       86
finley michael        85
vanexel nick          85
jackson stephen       85

Once again I need some input and Ill be happy to post why or why a player is the rating he is. Keep in mind that the highest rating (95-96) can be changed easily to 90 on request

Just to summarize a little bit more.
marshall donyell averages about 10.7 3P attempts per 48 minutes.
However, marshall donyell does not get 48 min. per game thus he only averages around 6 attempts per game.
He shoots a .416

In the first chart he is a 95, because of his 10.7 per 48 min.
the second chart he is only a 90, because of only 6 attempts per game.

Interesting...though this year, three point attempts are governed by the THREEPTATT attribute, which is the percentage of a player's field goal attempts that are three pointers. With some of those ratings, players will be hitting threes a little too often.

Andrew -> I shall adjust the threeptatt to be their correct % of their FGs. Donyell Marshall shoots more 3's than anything else.

Nowitzki -> Yes I have about 100-200 players with ratings, I only posted the top 20 or so
