Please help!! Freeze problem....

Postby jwood1985 on Fri Mar 11, 2005 5:38 am

Hey, what's up everybody? Alright, I'm really hoping that someone can help me as I am going insane. The game works fine in the menus. In game, it works perfectly, even with the graphics set higher. Then, consistantly about 40 seconds into a game (exhibition, one on one, practice, dunk contest/practice) the game freezes. Not just the game but the whole system becomes non-responding(no control, alt, delete). I've asked EA for support. They suggested I update drivers and stop any processes running in the background. Ok, I've had Ati's catalyst 5.3, the latest Omega and DNA drivers (even started trying some older ones), and even the original driver packaged with the notebook, plus the driver upgrade from the Compaq website. I've run the game with no non-system processes working other than explorer. I don't know what to do. I'm about an inch away from just bying Plastation 2 and playing live on it, but I really don't feel like paying a lot when I think I have a capable system. I have no problems with any other games, just Live. Could someone PLEASE give me some suggestions. Here are my system stats. Thanks, Jonathan

a complete in most cases means that your system is too hot. cpu freezes when it gets too hot. maybe you could check this, if you dont have a temp. monitoring proggie try out speedfan, it's free and works great. report back with your temp's here.

seems like there is nothing wrong with your specs. try playing with the lowest res frist then slowly up to the higher. see what res is causing your prob first.

Got the program

Postby jwood1985 on Sat Mar 12, 2005 2:02 am

Ok, I installed the program. Yeah, everything seems to be running pretty hot.
CPU diode 102 Celsius
Hard drive 37 celsius
Temp 1 67 celsius
Temps 2-7 are all 102 celsius

I don't think the program is working completely for me though. The only temperatures that changed at all are the hard drive and temp 1. I even experimented this morning. Left the notebook in a cold place about 10 min. When I started it back up the hard drive and temp 1 values were significantly lower while the others still read 102 celsius. So, I don't think it's reading all of the values properly. maybe my hardware isn't completely compatible with the program?? I don't know. I could understand the whole heat thing though. I just hope I can resolve this. So, yeah. I'm not sure what to do if it's the processor getting too hot while running the game when I can't get it's temp lowered. Oh, I almost forgot. I can't adjust the two fan speeds at all. If I put the value at 100% there doesn't appear to be any change and the fan rpms are consistantly read at zero, even though they are running.

And as to the other guy's advice. I started the computer after letting it sit all night and ran live right away with detail settings turned completely down. Still froze the entire system about 10 seconds after the tip. Thanks though...

temp is prolly your cpu, the 102 degrees are all wrong reads.

you can try upgrading the bios, in most cases that improves fan control / heating issues on laptops.

after that you might try out what coolmac said.

In addition to COOLmac's suggestion, try defragging and check your hdd for errors on a regular basis. Aside from our Tech Guru's suggestion, you may want to check your air circulation in the tower... cleaning your air vents and all that, tough that temp readings of yours are pretty much dubious.

I've been having the same problems lately with my PS2. The game freezes in all playing modes just like yours.

I've answered your question about the PS2 version in the thread you made over in General Issues. (Y)
