How is illegal defense different to defensive 3 seconds?

Can someone please explain to me how they are different...I thought both rules were removed in NBA a couple of years ago?

illegal defense basically is no one is allowed to hover on an area without defending a specific opponent. defensive 3 second its by itself self-explanatory since its the defense version of the 3 second rule for an offensive player.

The defensive 3 second rule was made because the illegal defense rule was dropped. There was no defensive 3 second rule before that...

This was because if you put someone like Camby or Big Ben under the hoop no guard will ever have any business of driving the lane withuot getting their shot blocked... And it would amount to very high block numbers too as the big guys would crowd the lanes and just stay there. This would cause players to shoot from further away and it would result in lower shooting percentages, lower scores, less entertaining game...

defensive 3 seconds is staying in the shaded lane without a near offensive player to be guarded...

illegal defense most of the time happens when a player attempts to double team but changes his mind half way and goes to guard his original man... before he goes back to his man he is caught without a man to guard... he seemed to be guarding a zone and not a man...

Looks like in the game it is called somewhat accurately to real life.

On offense a player is generally allowed to be on the sides or corners of the lane if he's moving and trying to get open. Watch Yao Ming, who is often technically in the lane for 10 seconds, but it's at the edges and corners while trying to get open for position.

Well, if he steps over the line every 3 seconds, it's fine. He only needs to have one foot outside the zone.

The game does not call offensive 3 seconds well though. I've had PC opponents stand in the line for 7 or 8 seconds on multiple occassions, with no ref calling it. I sometimes get called for 3 sec violations, but I have yet to see the PC get called for it.

Basically, I see defensive 3 in the key as a more DEFINITE way of illegal defense. Sometimes it would be to close to call, and thus, there were bad calls.

and also in illegal defense they gave you a warning... the offensive team got tech FTs after the first... now with 3 seconds, there's a tech every single time.

When a team plays zone, they no longer have to pretend to be playing man-to-man, except when they are in the lane, where they have to pretend to be guarding someone. If they are not within arm-length of a player for more than 3-seconds while in the lane, they commit a violation.

Some days ago Chucky Atkins was at the free throw line with his toe at the corner of the paint, and he got teched. They showed the replay too, it really was just his toe.

As I said it calls both pretty accurately.

In the NBA if you're in the lane on offense, but hovering around the perimeter (even if both feet are still in the lane) moving from side to side, 3 in the key will not be called. On D if there is an offensive player nearby and you're clearly moving to stay with an offensive player, even if technically you're in the lane the whole time, defensive three will not be called.
