Either that or you're holding it too long.

I think if you don't hold it long enough, he just loses the ball and you can do it over. If you hold it too long then he throws it against the rim.

If you hold the trick button just slightly not long enough, your player will miss a dunk (just as if you hold it too slightly too long). And of course, simply not holding it anywhere near long enough will cause the player to drop the ball while holding it past a certain point will cause the player to pull out of the attempt.

You might also want to try pressing the gather button a little closer to the basket. Some dunks are practically impossible from a long way out, and if they are possible the timing has to be absolutely precise. I know it's not the advice you want, but practice does make perfect. Once you can perform a wide variety of dunks easily and on cue, it's simply a matter of going out and doing them (but not repeating them ;)). Good luck! (Y)

Tell me about it.. I tried to dunk from the 3 point line in practice mode, it was like "Who are you kidding? Nobody can dunk that far." Sure...

either you held the trick too long or started to gather too close or too far from the basket. in my case, its often that i held the trick button too long.
