nba live 2004 vs espn basketball on xbox review

Postby sho89mtx on Sun Oct 26, 2003 6:04 am

ok, i'm going to give you a very un-biased view since i own both games and have played both games almost the same amount of time.

ok first off, both games have their strenths and weaknesses and both games are far from perfect. Having said that here is my simple review comparing and contrasting the 2 games on xbox.

Graphics-Espn basketball excells the most in this category. The faces are almost perfect and you can recognize almost everyone just by their face and when they do their cut scenes, it's like watching a real game especially using your hdtv on 720p which only espn basketball has. In the face department on live they players look way to cartoony and u can barely tell anyone apart except for iverson who has a lot of tatoos and cornrolls so that makes it easy. Now on the skin textures it's about even, both aren't that great and look kinda fake, but since espn's players actually sweat and it shows, i give the edge to them.
Overall winner on graphics=espn basketball

Presentation-now this category is really close because both have a farely good presentation. Espn has the tv style presentation but with awful commentating that gets repetetive, and live has awesome commentary, but doesn't have the tv style presentation.
so overall winner is=a tie

camera angles-now this is where nba live pretty much whoops up on espn basketball. espn has about 5 camera angles but u can't adjust them or zoom in at all and u can on live.
so overall winner is=nba live 2004

Gameplay-this category is a matter of preference to most people. There are a lot of good and bad things about both games in this category, but overall I think this is where nba live improved the most over last years game. Especially when u double team people and all the plays nba live has compared to espn.
So overall winner is=nba live 2004

lasting appeal-in this category both have dynasties and both have a lot of things that will keep you playing for a long time. But since espn basketball has the 24/7 feature(which is almost like having 2 games in 1)that u can spend hours on training your player and unlocking things and it never gets boring. I would have to give the edge to espn basketball
so overall winner=espn basketball

closing comments-so bascially that puts both games at a tie and usually what breaks the tie is user preference. Meaning if you there is a certian game that you liked better last year, you'll probably like the new version better than the other game again this year too. For me it's espn basketball just because i'm a huge graphics fan and the player models are unreal in epsn basketball, but i'm sure by the end of the year, i'll have played both games the exact amount of time give or take a few minutes :). Let's put it this way if EA goes back and keeps all their gameplay the same and everything else, and spends half as much time improving their player models to make them more lifelike as they did with their gameplay this year, than EA would win the battle every year. But once again EA focused on other issues instead of graphics and it showed.
That's why so far 95% of all the reviews gave espn basketball the edge this year in their reviews because of the graphics and how much more fun that makes playing the game.

Good post.

Can you explain more about this 720p on your hdtv? I read it in the IGN review too, it sounds cool, what's hdtv?

ok most tvs have less than 480 scan lines meaning that's how many lines that make up an image. The hdtv's have up to 1081 scan lines and there is only 1 game that uses all 1081 scan lines on xbox so far i think, and that's dragon's lair. But as as now, no other sports game has ever been 720p. For example nba live 2004 is 480p.
hope that helps,

i think ur graphics part is bullshit. The only player they really focused on was Allen Iverson, his shoes and everything. No other play has as much depth as him. I think the graphics are a tie, the faces on NBA Live arent bad, so i dont know why everyone is hatin. Only thing to mean that espn basketball has is the the espn thing and 24/7

Was that really necessary?

Great post sho89mtx. The reason i prefer live 2004 myself is cause gameplay is the most important to me. I'm a graphics whore also...but i really dont have a big problem with live's graphics because i can add patches when it comes to pc.

i think people keep missing the point of what nba live really needs to work on. its not eye candy and more shoes and all that stuff, its franchise. live has a terrible franchise when compared to madden. i mean its downright awful. you can get really good players by giving the comp 3 bench warmers who wont see a single minute for them. the free agency is terrible and the rookie draft is a joke. maybe when compared to other nba games(i only play live so i dont know) live is good but next to madden its a damn joke. this is what i want them to work on for 2005.

If you have a hdtv it should support up to 1081i or 1081ip.

Also k-mart, I know your kidding or partly blind because your the only one in the world that thinks live has better graphics than espn. Don't even get me started about all the detail espn has compared to live.

How do i know if my TV supports it though? Because the decision of whether i'm gonna get an xbox or ps2 is sitting on whether my tv supports hdtv.

Nick,

It's one of those thing where if you have to ask, you don't have it.
HDTV isn't something a TV can support, it has to be built from the begining with a special screen.

Yes. HDTV is high definition TV. Its not some cheap TV you can buy at radioshack. You have to buy it.

Over here, HDTV's are considerably more expensive, and in order to take advantage of them when watching TV, you have to pay more for high definition channels. You would know if your TV has it because it would probably advertise it all over it and would cost a lot more.

I play live 2004 on a Sony 48" HDTV somtimes. It looks wonderful....the game kinda looks larger than life on a wide screen.

Solid post, good to see you posting more intelligent and worthwhile threads!

It will always come down to preference--at the end of the day--if you like Live or espn--you'll be the one playing it.

Great post, and about hdtv, my neighbours have a projection hdtv that's 6 feet diagonal and gets the clearest picture I've ever seen. I watched a movie there once and was blown away.
Is 1 line of the 1081 (or 1080 like nickia said, which makes mroe sense) the equivalent of one line of pixels?

Theres no way Live has better camera angles than espn. I love Live but I really don't like the angles at all. They need a TV type angle.

I have a chance to play espn 2k4 and nbalive 2004, i would like to make some comments on some points that other ppl may not be aware of

I have to pick espn over live, because of all the details sega has put into espn

good stuff from live is the extra dunk button and hop step button, and the fact that pc version is coming, but espn is more realistic than live so far on console...

also in live, the player sizes are generally too big for the court, it's kinda of crowded, in epsn, you can actually space your players and use some set play properly without high traffic

espn generate a good balance of statistics in 8min-12min OUT OF THE BOX without big changes on sliders, in live you have to make big adjustment and experimenting sliders to make the game stats LOOK right

24/7 ? i think is kinda boring, is similar to nba street vol 2., you beat your opponent the same way by 21 (backdown, dribbling thru, dunk for 21 times) most of the time, i fell asleep while playing it

I just prefer espn over live because of the above

I've played espn and whats up with the delay when trying to shoot a shot? It's a good game but Live just flows better to me. But--I'll keep playing both and when the PC version comes out--I'll probably spend the rest of my time with that.
