Reading through a lot of these threads it seems that a high % of you guys out there use Auto Subs. I cannot believe this, as I know when I play I like to control who comes on and off, particularly in regards to who is hot, or whose development I want to control. It would annoy me big time if the comp subbed off Dirk when he was just starting to warm up, or take off Finley when he was blanketing Kobe or T-Mac, just because of a pre-programmed rotation. Can u guys please tell me if the comp takes into account these things re subs, or if it appears to follow a pattern each game. Thanks heaps.

Im with you, I hate auto subs. I like having total control, and doing the things you do, and things like dumping my bench for garbage minutes at the end of a blowout, putting in a clutch shooter for a buzzer beater, or a defensive specialist when someone is carving me up..

Me2, I love subbing. It adds variety to the game.

I used to auto-sub all the time, but as said already, total control over a team is just too fun. It adds great realism to a game as well.
The CPU would normally sub a PG for a PG, but in some teams, an SG can run the point as well, sometimes the SF or PF would take PG duties.
There's just more depth with manual subbing, you can also play around with different sub patterns and line-ups to suit your needs.

I usually let the CPU do the subbing... I never learnt to follow how exhausted my guys are.
I auto-sub... But I don't always like the autosubbing rotation. So I have kind of gotten used to it by now. Been playing since Live 95.
The game needs some sort of a tool or something that you can set your rotation. If you could rate the positions 1-3. 1. being the highest priority and and this meaning that the AI should play the starter as long as he can and only give him short breathers every now and then. 2. would be like medium, for example keep the guys on the floor relatively fresh, still the starter taking priority. And 3. would be share minutes quite equally between players, just someone starting but no priority on him.
Then you should be able to place certain positions to bench players. Like San Antonio, and you have Malik Rose coming off the bench, his position would be "C 2 + PF 2" so he would be the back up for the center and pf positions. Willis as a C3. Maybe Manu Ginobili as a "SG 2 + PG 3 + SF 3" (as he pretty much played last season)...
With this system you could easily use a 8 man rotation or a 12 man rotation... 8 man rotation would work when you would put all the positions as primary (1.) and then put three guys you want to use covering all the positions... Putting those SG 2 and SG 3 on the three people you want subbing. And then like C4 and something like that to the people you really have no use on the court or just leave them out of the rotation.
This system would also enable the stars to play way more then the players that weren't so stars. For example in Orlando T-Mac would play almost all the game while his supporting cast would be rotated to keep the starters fresh. And maybe the center position would distribute the minutes more evenly among the centers.
So you could really take control of the autosubbing... I don't think that this would be so hard to implement... Well maybe it would be, but hey they have the resources to put together some cool cutscene vids so why not something that really benefits the game.
This is again a flash of some sort of a brilliance from me... I don't know where I get these ideas, but you could put something like this down for the wishlist Andrew... If you ever see this.
Somebody should hire me to design the game for them... Or take me into their design meetings at least...

There's usually something about rotations and substitutions in every Wishlist, but I'll copy this suggestion down while I think about it.

the cpu does not care if a player is hot or not, if it thinks he is ready to come out he does
that is why i turn it off (0)

Nope i had my Stars on the suns stay in the game for a long time while New Jersey was Subbing its ass off from what i have learned if one of your guys makes 2 or 3 Fouls he is out to sit so he doesn't foul. Take Kobe for an Example he fouls a player 2 times so Phil Jackson sits him down to save him for later on.
Remember the T-Wolves vs Lakers last year? KG got fouled out because Flip Saunders was an ASS and didn't set him down when he fouled 3-4 Times

Metsis, I easily follow how energetic my players are because I just set the fatigue bar on so I can see while I'm playing the game. And yea, I sub of course.

Agreed.

I have the bar on too, but I'm just looking at everything else except the bar underneath. I'm looking out to get on a break etc. Looking for the play. I don't have time to look at their energy bars. And I can only see one bar at a time, cause I don't use all the id-thingies for the players, cause the graphics get all messed up because of it.
But wouldn't it be so much easier, if you could just automate the subbing so you really wouldn't have to do all that manual subbing??? And you would get the players you want out there from the bench and not just players that the AI thinks are the best...
I like my system a lot better then the whole manual subbing thing. Unless the manual subbing is done as I have suggested before. In an ingame popup. So you wouldn't have to pause the game all the time... This idea was that you could activate a "substitution" and "timeout" requests via buttons, and then at the next opportune time aka when you could these things would be called. Like a timeout when you got the ball and a popup that would enable you to sub when the ball would go out of bounds.
But the combination of these would be sweet... You just push the sub-button and the AI would do the subbing for you and you wouldn't have to manually do anything, just activate the subbing. It would really benefit the game if you could do it like in the real basket ball.
I have too much else to do and follow in the game, but maybe I'll have more time to follow the fatigue of my players in Live 2004, if it isn't as hectic of a pace as Live 2003 was...

I love manual subbing!! Im a coach in real life so i love to sub!
I like to use garbage time with my bench etc... bench guys who run cold... use bench guys who are running hot off the bench.... etc etc....

I use autosubst because the ratings of a players and the whole gameplay are not realistic. A tired star player is still better than a middle player from a bench. And with 7 mins a qtr i don't have to substitute at all. Thats why i use autosubst to let others to play allso and get more realism out of a game. CPU in live 2003 subtitutes quite fine - when one substitute player scrues up hes chance on a court - he sometimes woun't come to game on the other half of the game. I like autosubst - then i can be more in player/team role not in coach role.
I just hope in 2004 u don't have to change autosubst at the beginning of every game, but it will remember it.

how do you let the auto sub feature sub in between freethrows and not call timeouts after 2 freethrows? wastes your timeouts... i like to leave auto subs on.

For me,
I normally shift from AUTO SUBS and MANUAL...
I use Manual mode whenever there is need to make a star player sit down to reserve it for later time and/or make use of other players for critical shots.
