Hey guys, I'm new, and I have Live..Impressions..

Fri Oct 17, 2003 12:52 am

Hey guys I'm new to the board. I picked this game up yesterday and I love it. I'm having a hard time D-ing up on defense on all-star mode. I just wanted to comment on the too much animation. I have a possible "fix" for this..

I've found when you put your back to the basket, if you post him up out on the perimiter and back off you can pull of a freestyle move easier, not all the time or anything, but it's easier than trying to do it while your back is turned..

I'm playing a dynasty w/the sixers..9 min quarters..Comp right now shoots 60%, but I still need to learn some things..I shoot around 40% cuz I suck yet, haven't played live since I dunno, 2001 maybe..

As with mid range jumpers, you CAN hit them, you need to be open, you need to follow play designs..They're important!

I love how theres more team effort in this game..If you use the low post play, send it down to your PF or your C and start backing down..Help D will sometimes come, throw the ball to the guy who is open and you'll get a good look at a jumper..

As far as graphics..I dont care, they look fine to me, doesn't bother me as long as gameplay is good which right now it is..

Any comments?

PS - I'm wondering if anyone has any sliders to post yet?

first off, i love the gameplay and new animations and stuff...the new freestyle moves are cool, jump shots, nba store all kick ass...but there are 2 HUGE flaws in live. first off, the automatic protect ball thingy sucks terribly...i hate it, and it kinda ruins things...if a defender is near, you automaticaly turn your back, and if you try freestyle moves, you might go outta bounds...this is horrible..

second...the graphics...awful people...everyone looks like stubby midgets with big guts, big heads, skinny arms and legs...but if you get into a good game, you can see past it...

another thing is dynasty mode, one of the BIGGEST dissapointments ever! the draft is exactly the same...just wit some corny cut scenes...the off season is exaclty the same in general...just with a different design :( the trade/free agency is the same...just a terrible dissapointment...players of the month is cool though...i simmed through 3 seasons...and its the same shit...TERRIBLE...seriously...

on the positive hand...the players, like dirk, duncan, and especially AI play like real life...i have a blast playin with AI...the NBA store is a great addition...the sliders make things near perfect....ill tell you this....

if it didnt have that protect ball thing, the graphics were like last years, and the dynasty was like maddens...NBA Live 2004 would be the perfect game...but hey...EA shits us again...

my rating...7/10

Excellent! This is what I wanted to hear! Just like real life, it's easier to hit the open shot than being defended. You don't see too much of that in 2003 where the CPU can hit a jumper where there's three guys jumping in his face. It's not just a run and dunk game anymore, it's strategy, good passes and execution that's important in the half-court game.

I've found with jumpers so far that occasionally the D will give you it, but not too often, what really helps are setting screens around the baseline and curling off towards the middle of the field..sometimes the guy on the switch will back off and give you some room to get a jumper off..

Also, sometimes if you jump stop from near the three point line you can get passed the defender and shoot a jump shot...

Jump shooting is definitely ok imo. Infact, I think the fade-away animations they have this year are the best they've had. I just got done playing a game with the Lake show, and man, it was awesome hitting some fall away J's with Kobe. They look very life-like to me, and the shooting percentages can always be adjusted depending on the flow of the game. That's what I've been doing thus far. You probably will have to lower the CPU jump shooting some at first(if playing on Superstar) as they will hit almost any wide open jumper, especially the 3's.

Dynasty NEEDS to be good...

Well, actual court gameplay can be good and needs to be good if the game is going to be worth it, but for the game to have any real longevity value the dynasty mode really needs to be up to scratch.

Personally I have real trouble justifying buying a game were the only way you can make the game any different is by playing the same season with a different team. EA states that its aim is to create an authentic NBA experience and part of that is making sure that the trading, signing, development side of things is on par with what else is out there - at least. Best case scenario is that it's better. It really ruins it when after two years in dynasty you see Chris Webber still sitting in the free agent pool waiting for someone to sign him at league minimum.

It also really disappoints when you see a game come out with hardly any of its advertised "ground-breaking" features working anywhere near properly, let alone adequately.

EA hasn't done a decent 'Live' since Live 2000. The same problems have been popping up since 2001. I don't think that Gary Lamb really has any idea when it comes to making a good 'simulation', his interests seem to be in pretty graphics and sub-standard everything else. He needs to work with the Madden producer for a while.

When I see Chris Webber sitting their waiting to be signed for a minimum, I just ignore the chump and keep it real.

Question for you guys with the game. About the mid range Js, if you have a good player such as Kobe or KG, can you make them more than regular players when you are guarded? Its just so sweet to fade on someone with Garnett in 2003.

You'll definetly notice shooting percentages between players..Right now I'm the sixers but I signed Carter. His mid range game is much better than Snows..as well it should be..Carter hits about half of the "gaurded" shots mid-range..while I'm lucky if snow hits 1/5th of them..
