Unique Freestyle Moves

Sat May 31, 2003 10:46 pm

I'm interested to see how this will be. It's a great idea - I remember EA was originally going to do this in Live 2003, but opted to give everyone the ability to perform the same moves, if they had high enough ratings - it's an idea that should make the players themselves more like their human counterparts. It should also mean less talented players with high dribbling ratings cannot easily pull off someone else's signature move, thus dominating the game.

I'm anxious to see how this will be implemented - will it be simply a move that will only work for the particular player? For example: for most players, a simple crossover would be executed, but for some players, they would execute their own signature move.

In other words, Jason Williams and Chris Whitney would both be able to perform a simple crossover using the same freestyle move. However, there would be an advanced freestyle move that would allow Jason Williams to perform a more fancy crossover. Attempting to perform this move with Chris Whitney would result in the simple crossover.

Personally, I would prefer this method.

The other option would be to allow all players to attempt the signature moves, though very rarely would a player other than the one who inspired the move be able to complete it. Not a bad idea either, but not everyone tries to be flashy, so not the best way to go.

It will also be interesting to see how special freestyle moves are assigned. Will there be a "moves list", similar to a pro wrestling game? When we create a new player, will we be able to assign him signature freestyle moves? And of course, will we be able to edit these attributes either in the game or by editing a field in players.dbf? So many questions yet to be answered. :)

Do you mean moves like in NBA Courtside featuring Kobe Bryant (on Nintendo 64)? In that game some star players had their own signature moves. For example, Kobe had his own signature crossover.

Once again, it looks like Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter... :) :?

I'm most looking forward to it so that my players who aren't so good at dribbling don't do fancy stuff and loose the ball when all I want is a simple crossover. I also don't like those slo-mo spin move's made by the bigger players. Maybe the speed of that could depend on a new rating called dribble speed or something. :D

Yeah, except the star players can execute both the basic move and their signature move. If a player who does not have a signature move attempts to perform one, they will just perform the generic crossover instead.

THAT'S RIGHT, MAN!!!!!!!! Agree with you!
Those slo-mo spin moves look REALY WEIRD! That's impossible if a player could do such a stupid move in real NBA.

The Slo-Mo spin move is sooo stupid. It looks like the game makes it in slo motion for it to be "cool".

No they do it because the players doing it don't have a good quickness rating, in real life it would be slow but not that slow.

I actually like the signature moves. But only players with a high rating should perform fast crossovers, etc. But just cuz a player has a low rating overall (rookies, etc) some may still have a great dribble/moves.
Like rafer alston in 2003, his overall is a 77 but he has a high dribble rating which is the way its supposed to be.

This should be implimented into the franchise, where you draft someone based on their strengths, with scouting reports that actually work.

Any way i just wonder how the post freestyle moves will work. I mean for guards well kno its crossovers, spin moves, etc. but what about most moves? baby hooks (right or left hand) sky hook??
Like shaq uses the baby hook, but Rasheed Wallace has that high release turnaround. If rasheed plays like rasheed, this game is on its way to dominating basketball games like madden dominates football.

it would be cool if the free style could be used while dunking so that the dunks were not just random ....and i hope diveing for the ball will be added but not crazy diveing just when it is going out of bounds...dont want any nba jam 99 for the 64 diving though ...

Another cool feature would be post up moves with the free style like up and under or any other moves ...and i think the should improve the back up step and shoot to make it more like pierce because he has an amazing step back ....
