How can I be a coach?

I would like to be only a coach and not to play the matches.
I mean just substituting, timing out etc (like a coach). but if I choose that I will not control any team than I am not able to call a time out, to substitute.

I had only the 97 game but in that it was possible.

Can somebody help me how it is possible?

Start the game being your team, do whatever to prepare for the game. Just before tip-off, make sure your team is controlled by the cpu and everytime you want to do something just control your team again. It's a strange thing you're trying to do and it should be kind of annoying to have to switch back and forth without playing at all but follow those instructions and it should work.
