Controller Issues

I purchased NBA Live 2004 a while ago and have not been able to play the game due to controller issues. I have a Saitek P880 (not listed as compatible with this game) and a Microsoft Sidewinder (listed as compatible, although not my first choice for gaming).
Here's the issue with the Saitek controller:
I calibrated the controller in Windows XP (SP2) using the most recent drivers. The controller works fine in all other games I've played (including other EA Sports games). I configured the game pad in NBA Live using a generic controller configuration. I'm able to change the functions of each button and save the settings. When I go to play the game, nothing works. My player just stands there and does not move at all. I've tried using other controller settings in the game and still nothing.
Here's the issue with the Sidewinder controller:

I've tried contacting EA Sports Tech support, but they have been completely useless. You know, the canned responses of "Make sure your controller is properly configured" and "Below is a list of compatible controllers". Total joke!
Thankfully I happened to come across this forum, so hopefully someone here has had the same issues. I read an NBA Live 2005 thread where someone had the same Saitek controller problems, but that was 6 months ago and there was no follow-up. Please help!!!
