With the departure of a dominant center (more next article), Sophmore Carlos Boozer, has been carrying the load down low for the Cavs.
Earlier this year we predicted Boozer would be averaging a double double and he has helped us keep our word. Averaging 14.6ppg 11.7rpg 1.0bpg and shooting 63% from the field, Boozer is creating himself a reputation as one of the blue collar workmen of the NBA.
To make his great numbers even better, Boozer is playing the most time on the court for his team logging 35.7mpg in a back court focused rotation. Our theory here is that with the lack of another skilled big man in the front court, Boozer can only get better.
Raef, "Been and Gone"
With the rumors flying round, it could only be so long till GM Martin Harris shipped Big Z away. The trade that went through was the obvious one, 3 games into the season and deal was struck with Boston which sent Ilgauskas to the Celtics for skilled shooting Raef Lafrentz.
GM Harris' comments: "There is no Doubt that Big Z is one of the best centers in the East, but we needed some range from beyond the arc, and Raef gives that to us. Also now we have a very versatile team, with LeBron and Brown being able to work the post as swingmen, and Raef being able to step out side as a Center"
But Raef's stay was short lived. After 4 games with the Cavs and only mediocore to poor performances, GM Harris realised he had made his first mistake. "Raef just didnt fit into our system, i thought he wud be perfect for us but, sadly his outside shooting has not been much of a help (22%) and his defense has been poor. I'm sure he would flourish in another system, but we wont be changing ours for him"- GM Harris
The departure of Raef was set, after little negotiation, GM Harris managed to strike a deal with Detroit who had shown great interest in Raef as soon as he was on the block. The player who Boston got in return was Tayshaun Prince. This considerably weakens the Cavs in the front court, but it gives Boozer total control downlow and also gives Sagana Diop (who picked up Raef's defensive load, in limited minutes) to develop.
Lets hope Prince can bring the D and Range that GM Harris has been looking for.
Rookies.
Rookies! The Rookies! LeBron and Moore, Moore and LeBron. These two youngsters have been tearing up the league. These two are playing like seasoned Veterans, leading the Cavs through the first quarter of the season and combining to make arguably the best backcourt in the East.
LeBron has been posting what seem to be MVP numbers 27.1ppg 7.6rpg 2.3spg 8.6apg, the MVP candidates my not be posted yet, but many are sure that LeBron will be a shoe-in to the list. When asked about his unbelievable performances LeBron replied: "I actually can't believe it myself, i dont know how long this is going to last. It hasnt been me though, Mark has been setting me up incredibly so i get the easy shot or i give a easy pass, really he deserves half of my assists."
Moore, while struggling from the field (37.9 FG%, 22.8 3PT%), has been having a great passing season slotting 9.7 assists per outting, while also taking good care of the ball for a rookie 2.1 turnovers per game. "Its been great not having to lead the team but still having good minutes at the point, i think if LeBron wasnt such a great leader, i think i would be playing a whole lot worse and we wouldnt be in the playoff race."
LeBron already making posters.
7 Game Storyline
We present you with the storyline of the first 7 games of the season, enjoy.
Game 1
0-0 Cleveland Cavs @ 0-0 Los Angles Lakers
The first game of the season didnt tunr out quite how the Cavs wanted. The start of the game showed little promise for the season, with LeBron stuggling and the defense slack. Even through the second the Cavs were terrible, but with the quarter coming to a close Moore and James, made some brilliant plays to spark a run to put the Cavs behind by 5 at the half.
Halftime: 50-45 Lakers Lead
The third quarter saw the Moore-LeBron connection light up with some quick D, and lightning offense, LeBron and Moore pushed the Cavs out to a 1 point lead at the end of the third. 75-74.
The final quarter was hard fought, but it was the Lakers who got the last shot to take the win.
