Rarely heard commentator lines

Postby Alcoholic on Sun Apr 25, 2004 11:49 am

Every once in a while I hear Marv Albert say something rare or that I never heard before. I've heard him say a few rare things, but these 2 are the rarest I've heard (only heard these once).

"What a finish! What an athelete!" (Richard Jefferson windmill jam)

"From the free throw line! Unbelieveable!" (Micheal Jordan free throw line)

What rare lines have YOU heard?

paraphrased...

Postby HonorGlow on Sun Apr 25, 2004 12:05 pm

Paraphrased:
Czar: "He's definitely has his gameface on..."
Marv: "And what by chance does a game face look like, Czar?"
Czar: "You know, the drive, the intensity..."

This of course is paraphrased but the two times that I heard it, it definitely through me off.

On a side note: I was watching Game 2 of the Detroit Milwaukee series, and Marv made a comment about one of the current Pistons being "a one time Milwaukee Buck" I think that'd be cool if in future NBA live series that this idea could be put in, especially with the fact that players are moving to and fro in the dynasties!

One of my favotires is inspired by real-life commentary: "<player name> serving up the facial!". That's one of Marv's best lines, and I've heard it all of twice in the game.

In my most recent Dynasty game I lost Eddy Curry to injury, and Marv and Mike discussed whether it was a smart move to bring him after a mild injury earlier in the game. It was an exchange I hadn't heard on previous occasions when I lost a player in the same manner, and was very realistic. Although some lines are repeated a little too often, every now and then I'll hear something new, even though I've been playing the game since last November.

I hear the "facial" line all the time in my game.

There was one exchange I only heard once, and I can't remember how it happened and what they said, but Czar said something, then Marv made fun of him, and the Czar laughed. Vague, I know, but I just can't remember it.

The one where Marv I think says something about the player not scoring because his teamamate aren't moving, then Czar replies, so it's his teammates fault he's not hitting his shots or something, I've heard it a few times but its a good one.

Was it the line about Tim Duncan wearing his shorts backwards/insideout (?) during practice or something?

today when i played against the wizards and they said something like this (im not to good at english and it was a couple hours ago but anyway):

Marv: you know why Gilbert Arenas has number 0, huh?
Czar: uhm no... tell me...
Marv: that was the number of minutes they expected him to play in college... (then he said something like: look where he is now)

isnt that rare?

btw i hear the 'HE SERVES UP THE FACIAL'-one every game at least 3 times

you lucky guys ... in the french version the commentator is AWFUL  It's Eric Besnard, who comments games on french TV ... Anyone knows how to switch to the US version ? i've got only the french 2 CDs...

At least they could have added George Eddy instead ... It's a guy coming from the USA who's living for a while now in France, he still have an amusing americain accent, and man, he's so funny :D He said once after a D-Miles big dunk : '"wow badaboum beng beng YOU'VE GOTTA MAKE MILES TO SEE DARIUS !!!!"

Unless you can install an English version with the French release, you're probably stuck with Eric Besnard.

I guess Gilbert Arena's #0 is rare, I didn't hear it often when I played with them. I wasn't really looking for the ones about specific players (like Tim Duncan's backwards shorts, and the #0, and MJ separating the good players from the great), mostly the ones that they say about the game.

Some of the rare comments involving players wouldn't be as rare for a player using that team a lot. I might think that a comment about Desmond Mason adding a jumpshot to keep defences honest was rare if I didn't have a dynasty with them. I've used Washington >5 times and have heard the Arenas one once or twice. I figure that explains that.

I heard the injury one Andrew heard when Tim Thomas went out for 2 games.

I really like how they say 'the former 1st round pick', and I haven't played in a while so I don't remember if they still say "the former tar heel" if the player is form UNC.

This year they have much better comments about the game, for example if one of the teams has had an impressive run to cut into a large lead, they'll accurately acknowledge it (ie they won't claim the team that has fought back has been in control all game long), or alternatively mention the other team has let a large lead slip away.

I like the postgame comments during the playoffs too, acknowledging the way the series has gone and mentioning that the winning team is advancing to the semi-finals/conference finals/NBA finals.

i have the french one aswell...im in switzerland on the french side. its kind of a pain not to get the english version...the commentating sucks big time. i play without commentating now because it just got too much to handle.

...for next year...

Postby HonorGlow on Fri May 14, 2004 2:16 am

I hope they do keep the lines that they do say from this year BUT that you hear them even MORE rarely...perhaps once a season and that's it. Familiarity isn't all that horrible.

This one can go though:(paraphrased)

"Are you in insinuating that Jordan may have given tips on their one on one games back in Finley's high school days?"

I also think that the Czar mentions to much how this player is doing compared to his opponent counterpart...

In perhaps the best game I ever played on NBA Live 2004 or any basketball game for that matter..........

The game went into overtime. In overtime, I had to come back from 5 down in the last minute. Down by 3 with seven seconds left in first overtime, I ran a pick and roll and shot a three-pointer (Marv Albert said: "for the tie!") and it went in with no time left on the clock. Then came on a cutscene that I'd never seen before or probably never will see again, where the whole bench jumped up, players on the floor started celebrating, and every player on my team was doing that "count basket" motion frantically with their hands. Marv Albert was extremely excited, and since I myself was very excited, I don't really remember exactly what he said, but I know that I've never heard it before. He said something to the effect of "OH, he makes it in the dying seconds to tie the game! The referee is going to review it, and YES, it counts!! What a dramatic shot!" The entire team was gathered around the referee unlike the usual buzzerbeater cutscene, all of them frantically doing the "count basket" motion. And when the referee confirmed that the shot was indeed good, everyone pumped their fists and clapped. Best Live moment I ever had.

By the way, I won the game in second overtime, 115-107

...wow...out of nowhere...

Postby HonorGlow on Sat Jun 12, 2004 7:59 am

After 200+ games of either playing or doing real-time simulation, I finally heard one that I have never heard before...

Paraphrased:
Marv: He is simply on fire! Have you ever seen such a situation before?
Czar: Of course I have, I've been in this league for some time now. Nevertheless, his scoring is off the charts. He definitely brought his A-game with him

...after hearing a million, "He serves up a facial" this truely threw me off.

QUESTION: In researching NBA Live 2001-2003, I see that the same announcer did all three years. From year to year, what were some of the improvement or additions he made? Was it just different biographical comments or did special incidences such as NBA finals commentary added. Inquiring Honor Glow's want to know!

I guess I'm anxious on what new stuff the Marv/Czar team will add to the table for 2005.

It did improve year-to-year. More biographical comments were added, and the commentators seemed to interact. In NBA Live 2001, Don and Bob would basically only have two lines on a significant play.

For example:
Don: What a powerful jam by Shaq!
Bob: His therapist has to be happy. He had issues on that dunk!

It wasn't bad for the time, but they didn't really seem to interact with each other. By NBA Live 2003 there was some more back and forth which continued into NBA Live 2004 with Marv and Mike, though NBA Live 2004's commentary is far better. One of the most significant changes in the commentary this year was that they'd stop mid-sentence if they were interrupted by a play (eg talking about a mismatch, but stopping to comment on a blocked shot).

I had this about Lebron James
Marv: He seems like he's pacing himself
Czar: Hey he knows they got the lead, He's just sharing the wealth.
