how to correctly play and simulate an NBA season

Postby Checco on Wed Mar 10, 2004 3:51 am

Hi, this is my first post. I have a question for you: i always lose a lot of time thinking how to play a season. I play this game since the 99/2000 edition, but every time the same problem. I start a game but i have no time and patience to play 82 games with 12 min by quarters, so i start to simulate but it's defenetly not that funny.Particularly with this new edition i would like to play the action game, but still i can't lose my natural purism for the simulation!. How do you do? I don't want to play too many games with 6 or 5 min by quarters cause it will ruin the statistic, but i would like to play enough to feel the team my played team!
I know that this could sound much more a theological problem than a NBAlive problem, but you know, maybe on the other side of this Windows there's a compulsive maniac like me who resolved my BiG PrObLeM!

thank you and sorry for my english

bye!

Just Kidding again....I say play an 82 game season, sim the games against sucky teams, and play against tough teams.

yeah it gets pretty boring if ur playing an 82 game season with 12 minute quarters.

it would be great if they could add a feature where we can simulate quarters in future nba lives. that way, they can realistically simulate the game till the 4th quarter (or whichever quarter u want to play). that way, they can create a situation where u can fight back from a 10 point deficit or hold ur 10 point lead to win the game!

what do u guys think about this feature?

this way, we dont have to waste almost 2 hours of our time playing a 12 min quarter game.

anyways, to answer ur question specifically

i just play a few games in a season and sim the rest.
i like to play games during the playoffs and try to take my team to the dreamland.
however, to get to the playoffs, u need good players that can score. if u have a team that's ranked pretty high, but u dont have a proven scorer, then ur in trouble!

so hopefully that will give u some inspiration to enjoy playing the game :D

Personally I'm happy to play 12 minute quarters whenever I have the time, but I wouldn't mind having this feature. Any time saving feature that might allow you to get through the season a little quicker while still enjoying the game is fine by me. :)

Checco,

My suggestion would be to play every team at least once, then pick and choose which games you wish to play, simulating the rest. You should play the games which are important or fun matchups, or if you need to pick up a few wins and you don't trust your roster with simulated performance.

In the ESPN/NBA 2k series, there is a simulate to the end button where if you play, say up to the 4th, and are up by 30, you just hit it. It sims the rest of the game, no big changes.

Thank you

i think i'm going to do play a dynasty with Bulls, i simulate the first season trying to exchange for drafts picks. The real problem is my love for the draft. Yesterday evening i've been two hours loading a game with Utah, first season, i collected 1st draft from UTH 5ft from SEA 6 from CLE and 12 from POR, what a rebuilding season, i've exchanged everything was moving on two legs!
bye

I like Andrew's idea, play everyone then just pick out the ones you had fun against.

My take...

Postby HonorGlow on Thu Apr 15, 2004 5:00 am

This is what I had posted on nbalive.org:

-------------------------------------
My Answer: 82 games @ 10 minute quarters but simulate approximately 26 of them.
My Reason: Solely Dynasty points!
- 10 min quarters and 82 games gives your more opportunities to rack up quadruple doubles for more dynasty points meaning...
- more development time for your weaker players before the playoffs start
- Gives you more time to mull over possible trades
- Yes it really does test your endurance
- Gives you a chance to perfect non-standard plays beyond the isolation/pick&roll

I did some basic algebra calculations based on my first two seasons and basically simulate any game where the opponent is under .434. I don't know how accurate it will be by the end of the season but we'll see and then I can always adjust my guestimation. Simulating the game in 'real time' does give you some Dynasty points and you get to see what your players can really do without you at the helm. It's actually kind of interesting to just let them 'have at it' and hope for the best.

That's a nice idea, HonorGlow. I might give that a shot if I start a new Dynasty before NBA Live 2005 comes out. (Y)
