The Scouting Report will give you some information about the players, though you cannot view their ratings before you draft them.

First of all... There is no way to research the players before the draft. We have been requesting this, but so far nothing has happened. Maybe next year.

Picking the rookie... First of all you have to think about your team. What is your strength and what is your weakness. The Knicks have many good inside guys, but their back court after Houston is quite weak. So you might look for a guard more. Houston is starting to get old so you might want to get a shooting guard to back up Houston for a couple of seasons before taking over.

When you are "on the clock" as it says... Select the projected draft position and click sort from the bottom of the screen. Then you should see the players as they are projected to be picked. 1st overall, 2nd overall, top 10, top 20, late first round, late second round etc. Usually the higher the projection is the better the player is. So you want to pick one of the top projections at your pick.

Second thing is the scouting report... You should check the scouting reports to see the rookies strengths and weaknesses to see what kind of a player they are. As a rule of thumb you should never pick a guy who has something about speed or quickness in the weakness section. Speed and quickness don't really make a good player, but a slow or un-quick player will certainly be bad at this game especially at the guard position.

One thing you should see about the scouting report too is the Player Potential. This is usually excellent with the highest picks. It varies... But especially with the later picks it is very important that you take a guy who has the best rating in this. Cause they are usually more likely to get better with age then the rest of them.

There are usually some genetic freaks in the draft, but if they are not very high in the draft section they are not probably too good. Especially the really big guys. Really small guys might be good even with weak second round picks.

I haven't played too much of Live 2004, but usually you get total crap with you second round pick unless you lost the league or have like a top 10 draft pick. But with a mid 20 draft pick. You can go berserk and just draft someone to see just how bad they are...

A little summary of my draft method:
1. Pick a player that is projected about your pick or higher
2. Pick a guard if you need either a sg or pg or forward if you need one or center. Forwards and guards can be usually used with both guard/forward slots.
3. Pick a guy with no mention in the weaknesses about his speed or quickness
4. Pick a guy who has the highest Potential

With these rules you can usually get a pretty good player out of the draft that has some potential for growth...
