graphic card freezing

I got 9600 PRO along with Pentium4 2.0 processor.
My game freezes (more often in menu screen than in game) which I think it's graphic card.

Also for some reason, I can only use the old driver from the CD.
Any advices will be greatly appreciated

Also, when I install catalyst v.3.6 which many people say it's the most stable, the screen goes black when i restart
