Off-ball + lob == fun

Postby oboeguy on Thu Dec 04, 2003 4:09 pm

So my bro stops by to play some games and hang-out. He hasn't been up here since I got Live, so I start to show him some stuff: Freestyle moves, running the pick and roll, hop-step move, blocking from behind, etc. He tells me "show me some more cool stuff".

I figure, OK, how about off-ball control, even though I've used it like once so far. Using the Nets in the half-court, I get J Kidd with the ball, then off-ball to RJ. I run around a little as RJ, find a tiny lane to the basket, and call for the lob pass. RJ jams it in with two-hands. My brother, suitably impressed asks me to do it again... so I did, twice.

OK, so you're not impressed (you shouldn't be :shock: ), but I had to laugh at myself for missing out on all the fun of off-ball control. :oops: :oops: :oops: The point is that there is much to explore in this game (who doesn't want to try Reggie Miller jacking-up threes off of screens? come on, admit it, you want to try it!).

Just discovered? A bunch of those reviews and even ea said you could do that.

I use that off-ball lob thing if I'm winning a game, or I just use normal lob playing against friends (yesterday I got 13 assists with LeBron off nothing but lobs. :)

I really like calling an isolation, off-ball switching to my best scorer then cutiing to the hopp getting the ball and dunking, that's almost the only way I get assists.

Yeah, but completely useless. This is supposed to be used when a defender is going to block your dunk, right? Well, everytime a defender goes for the block there is contact and everytime there is contact the ballhandler switches to a lay-up on his own. I only get dunks off fastbreaks and when the lane is open. There is no point in switching to a lay-up if I'm open and about to hit a nice dunk. On the one hand, I hate this because someone with absolutely no skill gets lay-ups on me that I could've block. On the other hand, I'm glad it's in because there would be way too many blocks and it'd be too easy to beat most people (In games like NBA Street Vol. 2, where the switch is manual, most people have trouble scoring too much on me because I block all their dunks and they resort to 3-Pointers which I can "goaltend" since it's not illegal in Street.)

Back on topic, while I love jacking-up threes with Reggie, my personal favorite thing to do is back someone down, spin, and fade with Jordan and Kobe.
