Crash when I try to change detail settings

I try to change the detail settings and the game freezes and ultimately crashes. I don't know what the problem is but is there a fix?

That can be an issue when running the game on newer hardware it was never designed for. You can also try removing the hwconfig.cfg file in the cscripts folder, as the game should re-create it as necessary.
