Postby Andreas Dahl on Mon Dec 01, 2003 2:08 am

hey.
me and my brother are configurating a computer, and we'r almost done with it exept for a small thing:
about the RAM, we don't know what go to with
    -Kingston KVR400X6433/256 256Mb DDR PC3200/DDR400 184pic 400MHz
    -TwinMOS Original TwiSTER 256Mb DDR-DIMM PC3200/DDR400 184pin 400MHz CAS2
    -ADATA PC3200 256MB
    -Corsair Value S. PC3200 DDR-DIMM 256MB

ps. we'r gonna get two of them, so it gets 512... not 256

I see you're buying name-brand RAM that's more expensive..why?
Do you intend to overclock A LOT?
If it's just everyday gaming and whatever just go for cheaper RAM. There's no point spending lots on name-brand RAM if you're just gonna leave everything at stock speeds.
What is the price differential between these and just normal Samsung/Infineon/Hynix RAM?
Here in Vancouver, it's almost double the price for Corsair RAM and it's really not worth it at all unless you plan to overclock like a motherf...

I'd go with the Kingston. They make really good RAM, it lasts. Plus the price isn't that bad.

Unless, you're overclocking the RAM. Then I wouldn't go for name brand like bishibashiboy said.

i'm not gonna clock it at all...

it seems like we settled on two of these:
    TwinMOS Original TwiSTER 256Mb DDR-DIMM PC3200/DDR400 184pin 400MHz CAS2
it's rather cheap...

I think any one of those you choose will be fine then if you don't plan to overclock it.
The TwinMOS is Cas2 which is quite low latency (good). Not sure about the other models you listed and their ratings. But I'm sure any would be a good choice (Y)

oh nonono...that's not how it works.
Basically, CAS is just a latency rating for RAM, so the lower the value the better. Every type of RAM chip has a CAS latency value associated with it, so it's not as if some have it and some don't. Generally, if you buy cheaper RAM, they are usually rated at CAS2.5 or even CAS3. The more expensive ones are normally CAS2.

Twinmos is excellent for overclocking. There cheap, and Good for OCing.

Id go with that, next choice would be Corsair no doubt, then Kingston.
