Turbo doesn't always work

Postby cyanide on Mon Nov 24, 2003 4:36 am

I'm not sure if it's a fatigue thing, but today when I played against the New York Knicks, my user-controlled turbo button didn't work when I was on offense in the first half, but it worked on defense. After the half, the turbo on offense worked, but on defense, the turbo didn't work. In the whole game, my teammates (CPU) used turbo on both offense and defense.

i dunno if its the same deal,
but my players always seem like they are joggin, and if i press turbo, the animation is abit faster but they are still progressing down the court at a snails pace

I don't know if it's the same deal, but what I mean was either my players actually start running or they walk, not jog, but actually walk even with turbo. It's dumb because for one half my players can run on offense, but walk on defense, then the next half my players run on defense but only walk on offense. My CPU can always run though.

the players dun increase speed by much with turbo it seems
probally does but not by a lot
since .. well.. it is kinda more realistic when u fink bout it
instead of hafin a turbo button. they shud haf a slow down button where u walk up.. which they kinda haf

It's not realistic when I can't run to score a lay-up or catch up to a player who's about to score on a fast break. In both cases, I'd be walking. :( I don't understand why other people didn't really voice anything on this issue. I hope it's not just me.

Cyanide, I just noticed this problem after I patched my game, not sure if it was present before. Tell me, have you patched your game at all? I'm not positive there's a link here, could be a coincidence but I'd like to know if your game is patched at this point however!

As you say, on defense you do notice a difference in pick-up so logically the same should apply to offense, but this isn't the case!! I will test some other settings to figure out what's happening here! This is VERY troubling!!

ur not suppose to catch up to a player about to score on a fastbreak layup
in real bball
they get pass u in a fastbreak its a basket

in offence its kinda unrealistic how they can kinda catch up to u.. but i guess thats how it works or else it'll be too easy
passin forward in a fast break works but u gotta do an off ball switch and catch it near da basket soo you avoid the turn around catch to slow it down

In real life basket ball, you always can run faster then the guy with the ball. Having to bounce the ball slowes you down and thus a guy without the ball is relatively speaking faster. That is why you can sometimes see kind of a "second wing" coming on a fast break. Maybe it's a 1-on-1 situation, but the other players catch up and it suddenly is a 2-on-1 or a 3-on-2 or something else.

Running slower with the ball is realistic... I guess some of the guys in NBA don't really slow down with the ball like Payton, Marbury, Kidd, you know the best ball handlers in the league, but most of the guys do.

It is hard to run at your very top speed and control the ball, cause you have to run so fast that is almost all you can concentrate on and the ball drops to second place and that is when it gets turned over.

I just discovered my problem with the turbo option. What I observed is that activating customart for patching slows down the game quite noticeably! This translated (poorly) to how the players were responding to my input, probably due to a less than adequate framerate, causing the apparent lack of player pick-up speed on offense to be even more evident. Anyhow, sure enough, once I de-activated customart the player response suddenly improved, seemingly allowing for a more effective turbo option.

Offcourse, as someone put it, running with the ball is not the same as running without :D. So I believe that the "ballhandler turbo slowdown" effect is reflected "reasonably" well in the game.

It may be related or not, but I had a problem with both the insufficient space for save game (with 13gb free on the drive) and my turbo suddenly not working in the middle of a game the other night. After reading about the save game space problem in the Technical Issues forum, I took the advice to delete my temp internet files (from within IE) and both the save space problem and the turbo not working problem went away.

Hope this helps. :)

Calvenn: Nope, I have not patched the game yet. For my situation, I think it's closer to busta_cap's suggestion.

busta_cap: The last time I played, my turbo button was working for the entire game, and I think I remembered that I deleted my temperary files before that coincidentially. I'll try again, but probably over the weekend since I'm busy with finals

Thanks everyone for suggestions :) Hopefully the problem will be resolved.

Even when I'm on the fast break, i hold the turbo button but hte CPU defender can still manage to catch up easily. And this is not about how "realistic" it suppose to be when the ball carrier is suppose to be slow...i understand slow, but not THIS slow.

I tried to delete all temp internet files but to no avail.

ya seriously.. you don't get slow down that much with the ball.. realisticly.. i'm pretty sure in "HIGH LEVEL" of basketball
the guy runnin the break with the ball CAN out run the guys without the ball..
when you see wing players coming up.. it is because the ball handler is slowin down to make his move/decision to pass or drive in..
unless your a big man.. all the guards in the NBA or college should have enuf dribbling control to run fast with the ball

just like the old versions of nba live.. in superstar mode. or maybe even all-star mode.. the CPU defenders does this super speed catch up thingy when you are on the break.. the thing is.> YOU CAN"T CATCH THEM
it is just like i said before.. it makes it harder

you know how i run the break tho?
turbo button is necessary but i use the crossover button to gain speed
when i'm at the free point line.. i would press the cross over button and it will boost the speed then i go up for the dunk

it is kinda funny lol
how realistic is it if dribbling the ball is slower than fillin the lanes?
how realistic is it if crossing over is the FASTEST forward movement..?

What controllers are you using? I'm assuming you're playing the PC ver.

Yup, I'm using the PC version and the Logitech Dual Action gamepad. An update: When I started NBA Live this morning, I loaded up my franchise with the Raptors and started playing my game, the player movement was walking on offense and defense. The turbo button had almost no significance. I quit the game immediately, then after a few minutes I re-loaded the game. The player movement was fast and the turbo worked well. Very weird.

Another thing which hasn't been mentioned is the calibration of your gamepad. I've had to do so a few times, so this might have a bearing on the situation. Try and let us know.

Calvenn and cyanide... I bought the Logitech pad and received it this past Wednesday.

There IS a problem with the controller's hardware.

Do you notice your players moving slowly in all directions or is it just to the right?

You'll notice that it's better when you restart the game or plug in the controller again--but soon enough you'll find the players reverting to their "sluggish" selves.

Go to the Logitech website and read the discussion forums. You'll find numerous posts on how horrendous this pad is. Who knows. You might have the "alternate" version to the pad as they released two.

It's complicated.

Uh oh... I don't like the sound of that. And I just recently bought that controller too. What you said does make sense. I've had to recalibrate the controller twice already. I think I might exchange it. It was an excellent controller at first too :( I might as well get the Thrustmaster.

Yea get rid of it--it's crud.

Just doing this forum a favour for people who decide to get the Logitech.

I was thinking about the NYKO AirFlo PC controller.

I'm using a ps2 adapter, one of those Joy Box's and the turbo button is on and off for me too...i'm not sure but for me, the button configuration would mess up for the trigger buttons every once in a while, thus the turbo is messed.

d4n88: I was reading around in the forums at Logitech, and the issue lies at the jittery and off analog stick, which I'm starting to get. This doesn't have a direct impact on the turbo button though, considering that my turbo works on offense and not defense shouldn't be because of hardware flaws in the joypad. I'm hoping I'm still able to replace it though.

You should be able to, though.

If you notice the player's icon spinning, then you know the turbo's working, right? Hope my comments have helped.
