Question - How to unlock secret characters?

I recently read Andrew's article on NBA Live 2004's Dynasty mode and it made me want to install this game once more. I found some cheat codes. The codes to unlock shoes are working but I can't unlock the hidden players using the codes given. Putting the codes as last name when creating players doesn't do anything.

I have a feeling it might be. They're definitely there in the players.dbf file though, so it's just a matter of opening up a saved roster, finding those players in the database, and changing their TEAM to 29 (Free Agents). Once that's done, re-load the roster in-game, and sign them to the appropriate teams.
