Good luck against Sacramento.

I think you should stick with Hardaway if you can. Like you said, he's a favourite, and while it is possible to go pick a better player, stay with Timmy and get him a ring. What isn't taken into effect is the presence and team chemistry a player can contribute. Maybe make him more of a role player instsead and get a rookie who can start and theoretically 'learn' from Tim?

JOE DUMARS APOLOGIZES
By: Joey Perez
November 11, 2003

Image

HEAT OF THE MOMENT
A day after given a statement, the Detroit Pistons GM apologized for his comments. The part of the statement for which Dumars apologized was when he said:

“We assembled this team to win ball games not to get outplayed by an unproven point guard and a center that cant even understand his coach.”

Dumars apologized to Yao Ming and Speedy Claxton saying that he in no way meant to offend those two players. Furthermore, he said that they are quality players and that those words just came out in the heat of the moment. However Dumars also said that the rest was very true and that he meant everything he said about the changes.

Joe also said “ I’m very sorry for my comments and my apologies go to Yao and Speedy. I’m usually a soft spoken person and I got caught up in the moment.”

TEAM RESPONDS WITH DOMINATING OUTING

RIP HAMILTON LEADS THE WAY
Kobe Bryant was no match for Pistons guard Richard Hamilton who out scored and simply outplayed arguably the best guard in the league. Richard Hamilton and the rest of the Pistons came into Sacramento with something to prove. Rip took it upon himself and single handedly took over the game scoring 11, 8, and 11 in the first three quarters respectively finishing with 34 points.

Despite foul troubles from starters Bryant and Haywood the Kings were able to finish the first with a 24-23 lead. However behind strong defense from the Ben Wallace and steady offense from Hamilton the Pistons were able to take the lead heading into halftime, 55-47. After making a run in the beginning of the third the Kings folded and were looking at a 12 point deficit heading into the final period, trailing 87-75. And in the fourth Detroit’s bench added to the leading behind some good play from newly activated Wesley Person and Chris Whitney who contributed with 8 and 9 respectively in their fist action of the season. The final scored was 114-98. The Pistons are now 5-2.

FRANK WILLIAMS MAKES FIRST START
After a line up change that benched Tim Hardaway and gave the starting point guard job to Frank Williams the one year pro did not disappoint running the offense smoothly and locking down rookie star Dwyane Wade holding him to 12 points while adding 10 points and 5 assists. Hardaway played five minutes in the fourth and scored 7 points. The leading rebounder for Detroit was Tyson Chandler who pulled down 11. Ben Wallace had 8 points, 9 rebounds and 2 blocks.

For the Kings Kobe Bryant led the way scoring 29 points in 29 minutes, he also had six rebounds. Brendan Haywood added 12 points and 8 boards.

NOTES:
Every active player played and scored tonight. 114 is the most points scored all season. The Pistons out shot the Kings from the free throw line by 20 and made 19 more.

Image
On his great performance
“I just came out in full attack mode and I wanted to lead us to a W which we got. The main thing was that I was able to get good looks tonight and my shot was falling. Also the new lineup change allowed me to get on the break more and score easy baskets that way, and that’s not a knock on Timmy but Frank did a nice job out there tonight finding me off the picks and running the offense ”

Image
On first career start
“It felt great being out there as a starter. I was nervous and I really wanted to do well. I thank coach Brown for the opportunity and hopefully I can continue to show my worth out there on the court.

Wed Jun 30, 2004 2:47 pm

thanks mick, i think ur right, ill prob jsut keep him around and use him like i did tonight, just to get him his ring, right now i like the squad but i might start exploring sum possibilities for the bench and to try to get ben wallace going, he;s not even averaging 10 boards a game, it scares me that he averages mor points than rebounds

Great win! Good solid performance by the sound of it. It's always great when everyone scores.

Try to get Ben Wallace in the groove. It's tough sometime, but I think once you get used to playing with a player, you can work out when it is best for them to go for a rebound etc. Wallace is HUGE when you get him going. And in Live it's not all that hard to get some offence out of him either.

Any chance you can post some team and/or league leader stats? Not after every game, but perhaps after every 5 or so you could give us a 'league update' which details stuff like points leaders, MVP candidates etc?

PISTONS CONTINUE ROADTRIP

DETROIT VS GOLDEN STATE, AT 6:30 PM
After a great victory last night the Pistons will face the Warriors on the second night of a back-to-back. The Detroit Pistons hold the central division lead with a 5-2 record. Meanwhile the Warriors are trying to get on track with a record of 2-4.

DAVIS PLAYING POINT
Ricky Davis said yesterday he enjoys playing point guard because it allows him to use his size and athletic ability against smaller guards. Ricky has been played at point by coach Larry Brown a few times this season and the coach says he will see how things workout and how the team plays with Davis at the point. However Frank Williams remains the starting point.

DETROIT WINS ON THE ROAD

DYNAMIC DUO COMBINE FOR 50
Richard Hamilton and Ricky Davis each scored 25 a piece to lead the Pistons to their second win in as many nights. But the player of the game is Frank Williams who paced the team with his 18 points 8 rebounds and 11 assists. The young point guard starting in just his second game was able to play well on both ends of the court and lead the team to a victory.

In the first quarter the Warriors started out strong leading by as many as 20 but late in the quarter the Pistons made a run to narrow the margin to 11, trailing 21-32. In the second Detroit outscored the Warriors by thirteen scoring 34 finishing the first half up 55-53 behind 13 a piece from Hamilton and Davis. The game remained close the rest of the way with then third quarter ending 77-76 in favor of Golden State. In the forth the Detroit defense was able to get key stops late in the game and trailing by four Williams fed the ball to Marcus Camby inside who came through in the clutch with two throw downs to tie the game. A steal and two free throws from Williams sealed the game and the final score was 109-102.

For Golden State the leading scorer was Andrei Kirilenko who had 26 points on 6 of 11 three point shooting. Larry Hughes scored 21. Etan Thomas chipped with 14 points and pulled down 13 boards out rebounding Ben Wallace who only had 8 boards to go along with 8 points and 3 steals. Keon Clark had 15 points for Detroit off the bench.

NOTES:
Hardaway did not play. Wallace is averaging more points than rebounds. Marcus Camby was benched in the third after yelling at Larry Brown because he wasn’t getting the ball.

Image
On pairing up with Rip and scoring 25 a piece
“Well I think me and Rip are very good offensively and we complement each other well, we know each other and know where we like to shoot from. I think a great one too punch and its hard stopping us, its basically you have to choose your poison. ”

Image

Image
On the duo he and Ricky make
“Well Ricky is a great score and so am I and if we are able to get each other going then we cant be stop. He is a great attacker and Im a great shooter add those too up and you should be getting a lot of points. Its nice to see someone else step up and score points and take some of the load off me.

PISTONS GO TO HOLLYWOOD

PISTONS LOOK FOR THREE STRAIGHT
The Lakers are 2-6 and will host the Pistons tonight at 7:30 in the Staples Center. Detroit has won two in a row and will look to make it three as they continue on this four game road trip. They are currently 6-2.

DISGRUNTLED VETS
Two veterans on the Pistons are not happy with their lack of playing time. Tim Hardaway came out today during shootaround and said that he was brought here to be a starter. Hardaway, who was recently taken out of the starting lineup, also added that if he’s not going to be treated as part of the organization then he prefer being elsewhere. Marcus Camby is another unhappy Piston. In the last two outings, both Pistons victories, Camby’s playing time has been lowered and he says that the ball is not seeing its way around to him. In their last game against the Warriors he was benched for complaining. We will see what Joe Dumars the GM will do about his unhappy players.

RIP’S 50 NOT ENOUGH AS THE PISTONS GET CRUSHED
By: Joey Perez

AUBURN HILLS, DET

RED HOT PISTON IS RED HOT AFTER POURING IN 50
Richard Hamilton come out on fire scoring 10 points in the first, but he was the only Piston who came out to play as the Lakers bench outscored Detroit’s 18-0 ended the period leading 31-23. In the second the Lakers continued to score as did Hamilton scoring 17 of Detroit’s 24. The Lakers scored a season high 43 in the second and led 74-47. During halftime Richard Hamilton was furious in the locker room. He came out for the second half alone, apart from his teammates and with headphones on. He would then score 14 points and total 41 after three but Detroit was still down big 111-77 despite their efforts at a full court press. The onslaught continued in the fourth and the Lakers won 142-104. Richard Hamilton finished with 50 points. This loss puts Detroit at 6-3.

The Lakers were on fire all night long running up and down the court for easy baskets and their stats were impressive:

Image

For the Pistons Ben Wallace finally had a big rebounding game and he finished with 17 boards and scored 12 points. Frank Williams scored just 6 points in 33 minutes.

Image

NOTES:
Hardaway did not play for the second straight game. Hamilton leads the league in points (259), points per game (28.8), and minutes per game (41.6)

Image
On tonights game and Rip Hamilton going off for 50
“Well Im very disappointed with the way they played tonight. We let them score 142 points on us that is just ridiculous. We didn’t play defense what so ever. And on offense Richard had to carry the load because nobody else was making shots. And when you have to put up most of the shots well with his talent he’ll put up more than 50 next time. But the point is we are not playing Detroit basketball. ”

Image
On his first 50 point night
“Well right now what I feel is that its pointless. Don’t get me wrong scoring 50 feels great, my shot was falling but the point is I felt like I was the only one out there and the rest of the team was no where to be found. With the exception of Ben Wallace I was the only one playing for Detroit. That’s how I see it, I feel like if I don’t score a lot then we lose but today I score 50 and we still lose. I don’t know man, I don’t know whats up ask the other 11 guys.”

PISTON WILL TRY TO BOUNCE BACK

TONIGHT, 7 PM AGAINST SHAQ LED SUNS
Tonight the Pistons will concluded their four game West road trip in which they are 2-1 against the Phoenix Suns. The will also try to forget a game in which they were embarrassed by the Lakers and couldn’t take advantage of a great night from Richard Hamilton who scored a career high 50 points.

TRADE RUMORS
There are a lot of rumors out there and they focus on the players that Joe Dumars is looking at to fill voids on the team. Nobody is quite sure if he will act on any of these rumors but there are many who say that he is just waiting for the right time and after an embarrassing loss last night that time might be soon.

PISTONS LOSE CONTROL IN SECOND, AND A CLOSE ONE IN FOURTH

By: Joey Perez
November 15, 2003
AUBURN HILLS, DET

BAD SECOND QUARTER
The Pistons started the second similarly to how they started the first. But this time they weren’t able to rebound. The Phoenix Suns started the game on a 15-2 run. But a great comeback by Detroit bridged the gap to just 4 finishing the first down 30-26. In the second the Suns came out strong again and this time they stayed tough feeding Shaq and simply out playing the Pistons the rest of the game. After two the score was 70-57. Richard stayed hot for Detroit with 20 in the half and Oneal had 18. In the third the going got even tougher. There was no stopping the Suns. But behind 11 from Richard Hamilton they were able to cut the deficit to 11, trailing 102-91. Also in the third, Gerald Wallace hurt his back going for a dunk, he is scheduled to miss 11 days.

In the fourth quarter Detroit came out aggressive and playing hard nosed defense. At the 10-28 mark they had come within 5, trailing 105-100. The game stayed close the rest of the way until with about 1 and a half left the had a 8 point lead, Richard made a three from the top and then Ben got the rebound, Detroit called timeout. With about 10 seconds left Hamilton hits another three from the corner but there is no more time and Detroit loses by 5, 130-125 after fouling in the last seconds. Heart breaking lose puts Detroit at
6-4.

The player of the game was not Oneal, it was Billups who scored 30 points, 5 rebounds, and 12 assists. Shaq posted huge numbers as well scoring 28 and grabbing 10 rebounds. Sprewell 24 and Flip Murray add 21.

Image

For Detroit Rip had 40 with 7 rebounds. Ricky scored 22 and Ben Wallace 8 to go with 10 rebounds.

NOTES:
Hardaway did not play for the third straight games, and the rumors are he will get traded. Joe Dumars has been talking to different teams and this game might just take him pull the trigger.

Image
On the teams performance:
The team is not playing the right way. I have my teams play a certain way and if they do they win, if they don’t then they get themselves in scoring contest like they have been doing lately and they have to dig themselves out of big holes. We have the best defensive player in the league, WHERE IS THE DEFENSE, that’s all I have to say?

UNHAPPY SUPERSTAR GETS FINED
By: Joey Perez
November 16, 2003
AUBURN HILLS, DET

RICHARD HAMILTON IS FINED $5,000
Richard Hamilton was fine $5,000 today by the league because he declined to answer the media after a loss to the Suns. Hamilton who has been carrying the teams offensive load apparently was too angry to talk after a game in which he scored 40 points. He had scored a career-high 50 a day before in another game that the team lost. Today during practiced all Hamilton said was he just didn’t feel like talking after the game and that he will gladly pay the fine.

Image

LARRY BROWN CRITICIZES TEAMS PLAY
Richard Hamilton is not the only one unhappy with the way the rest of the team is playing Larry Brown is fed up with his teams recent play. Larry is quoted as saying, “Everybody that knows me know that I am a perfectionist and my team is making me look bad. We are not getting back on defense. We are not sharing the ball. And not everyone is playing hard. I don’t know if it’s the players we have or what but somethings gotta change if we plan to go deep into the post season. Every game is important and we have to start playing the right way.”

TEAM NEWS
Gerald Wallace has been placed on IR with an injured back, he is expected to miss 10 more days.

The rumors continue to surround Motown as there is supposedly a blockbuster trade in the making that can be finalized anytime soon. We will see what happens.

ROSTER RELOADED
By: Joey Perez

AUBURN HILLS, DET

JOE DUMARS PULLS THE TRIGGER
After two horrible games, a dissatisfied superstar and an angry coach, Joe Dumars finally pulls the trigger, not once, not twice, not even three times, but four times making four overnight deals with the Cavaliers, Wizards, Timberwolves and Heat.

TOTALLY NEW DETROIT ROSTER
The trades bring in an array of new talent but also takes away many of the Pistons that were key parts to the team. These trades leave a completely different roster. Many new parts that will have to fall in place. Team chemistry will have to be formed. Lets break down the deals.

CAVS
The Cavaliers send speedy point guard Tony Parker to Detroit for Dikembe Mutombo, Wesley Person and Frank Williams.

Image

Image Image Image

WIZARDS
Wizards trade young star Amare Stoudemire to the Pistons for Ricky Davis, Marcus Camby, and Tim Hardaway.

Image

Image Image Image

T-WOLVES
The Pistons receive lanky Tayshaun Prince in exchange for Tyson Chandler, Dan Dickau, and Samaki Walker who Detroit signed in order to finalize the deal.

Image

Image Image Image

HEAT
The final trade of the night occurred when the Heat and Pistons exchanged role players sending hustlers Mark Madsen, and Eduardo Najera, and young shooter Kareem Rush for Udonis Haslem, Scottie Pippen, and Keon Clark.

AUBURN HILLS, DET

TONIGHT, AT 7:30 PM
The new look 6-4 Pistons will face the 4-6 Lakers tonight at the Palace. The Detroit Pistons who recently finished their 4 game road trip in which they went 2-2 will face the Lakers again for the second time in four days. However, the Lakers will be facing a much different Detroit tonight after four trades sent three starters and most of the bench packing to different teams in exchange for Tony Parker, who will probably start at point guard tonight, Tayshaun Prince, Amare Stoudemire and three players who they hope will be key off the bench in Mark Madsen, Eduardo Najera, and Kareem Rush.

DETROIT BRINGS BACK MICHAEL CURRY AND SIGNS OTHERS
The Detroit Pistons have brought back small forward Michael Curry signing him as a free agent to a one year contract worth $366,931. They also signed Ken Johnson, Rodney Buford, and Felipe Lopez each to 1 year/ $366,931 contracts.

AMARE MEETS THE PRESS
By: Joey Perez
November 18, 2003
AUBURN HILLS, DET

NEWEST PISTON HAPPY TO BE IN MOTOWN
The newest Piston, Amare Sroudemire acquired via trade is happy to be here. He was flown in over night to play tonight here at the Palace and before the hame he met the press. Here is what a very jubilant Amare Stoudemire and Joe Dumars had to say:

Image

PRESS: Joe what made you pull the trigger on all these trades and so early on in the season?
DUMARS: Well I didn’t like the direction the franchise was heading and I figured if we’re going to fix it we should do it sooner rather than later. Another was that with a talent like Amare we couldn’t just sit back he was available so we jumped at the opportunity.
PRESS: Well you made multiple trades and basically sent away a whole roster and built a new one over night, was this planned and what was the reasoning behind it?
DUMARS: Well the thing is that we had a lot of good talent but that’s it we didn’t have any chemistry and everybody just wanted the ball all the time. The plan was to make defensive minded team that would win games on defense. We were able to bring in young talent that we think will mix in good with the stars we had. We look forward to seeing how these guys play together and we see this as a move that will definitely take us over the top.
PRESS: Now Amare how does it feel to be a Piston?
AMARE: It feels great.
PRESS: How do you feel about leaving behind a team in Washington with which your were doing well?
AMARE: Well we know this is business first and trades happen. In Washington I was the go to guy and I basically had the team on my back, so I know how Rip feels, and I think this trade will helps both of us. I feel like I’m in a better situation.
PRESS: How?
AMARE: Well here they have assembled a nice collection of talent and its not just one star and with me coming in I think I can help out and carry some of the load. I basically see us playing more team oriented and not just one guy carrying the team.
PRESS: Have you met the other guys yet?

The trades you made were very interesting i thought you couldve stopped after getting Tony Parker i thought that trade was very good.

I think the Amare trade was alright but you sure gave up a lot for one player.

I really disliked the Tayshaun trade i thought this was a horrible mistake.

The last trade was good because you got 3 pretty good players for 3 not that great ones.

Very cool dynasty keep it up

LOSING STREAK AT 3
The Detroit Piston are on a 3 game skid after losing to the Lakers in a game that favored Detroit in almost every statistical category. The loss comes after a newly formed team was unable to produce offensively in the final quarter. The loss drops the Pistons to 6-5.

THREE NEW STARTERS
The Pistons debuted three of their new players in the starting lineup and the unfamiliarity with each other was costly in the fourth when trailing by 6. They weren’t able to score in the last minutes and that cost them the game losing 93-87. It was a close game throughout and for the most part played at Detroit’s pace. The new players were able play well on defense but were lost on offense. Amare Stoudemire, in his debut with the Pistons, battled with foul trouble for most of the game but finished with 20 points and 9 rebounds. Tony Parker scored just 9 points, and dished a mere 3 assist but grabbed 7 rebounds. And Tayshaun Prince added 13 points.

BEN WALLACE LEADS THE DEFENSE
After one quarter the score was 24-16 in favor of LA. Hamilton finished with a season low 16 points but grabbed 9 rebounds. Hamilton was unable to get going in the first quarter for the first time in 10 games.

At halftime the score was 42-41 LA still on top. The first half featured great Detroit defense which out rebounded the Lakers 58-38 and at halftime Ben Wallace had 8 boards on his way to 19 for the game, he also had 5 blocks and 8 points.

The defense was tough in the third as well going into the fourth 64-63, the Lakers with the lead. However in the fourth the Pistons were unable to come through in the clutch and the new faces were unable to find each other for points finally losing in a close, defensive battle 93-87.

For the Lakers the leading scorer was Stephen Jackson who had 25 points. Sam Cassell added 15, and Boozer had 14 and 9 rebounds.

NOTES:
The newly acquired players had no time to practice with the team and had to suit up for the game.

On tonights game and the new players
“Well I was impressed with the way they played on the defensive end. The work hard and hustled and that kept them in the game. Ben Wallace had a monster game grabbing I think it was 19 rebounds but they all played well. The offensive struggle were to be expected because this was their first time playing together, we’re going to be teaching them the new offense and hopefully they can pick it up. But I mean these new guys are very talented and they will fit in nicely. We just have to work the offense and continue improving on the defense. Im very excited to coach a great kid like Amare Stoudemire, I think he will help Ben Wallace inside and he is a very good inside score but the rest of the guys are great players and lets just see how we can get rolling. ”

On his Pistons debut
“It was kind of akward. Since we hadn’t practiced we were just playing around with the ball and not running any type of offense. I was great playing with these guys, they all want to win and once we start practicing with each other then we’ll start winning some games. I’m just happy to be here”

On his Pistons debut and the new offense
“Yea I like playing here, they have nice players and once we learn the plays and build some chemistry I think we’ll do good. Larry is a great coach and hopefully I can be the point guard he was looking for.”

TRADES RAISE QUESTIONS? DID GM TRADE TOO MUCH
By: Joey Perez

IN THE AFTERMATH DETROIT GETS 6 FOR 12
The Piston traded away 12 players and received just half of that. And after another loss to the Lakers the question was raised, Did Joe Dumars get trigger happy? Did we trade too many players? Well when faced with the questions about his trades Joe was much too happy to explain why the trades went down:

“The first trade that we made was the most important one, we needed a point guard, and were able to get a very good in Tony Parker. He is very fast and can score well. The point guard was a position we were trying to improve at and we were able to get a quality player for peanuts, I think Tony is very underrated and we were able to acquire him for Frank Williams, which was disappointing, Dikembe who we felt was too old and for Wesley Person.”

“The second trade was also a big one because it gave us an all-star caliber player in Amare, despite the fact that we had to let go of Ricky Davis who was doing real well, we also lost Camby but I think Amare will be a much better player than Camby was, and we also lost Hardway who we originally brought in to lead the team to a ring, but we wanted to get younger and letting him go was step one.”

“The trade with the Wolves was an important one because we really wanted a player with shutdown defense and Tayshaun is that kind of player, his defensive awareness is incredible (90) and the fact that we got him for three bench players was pretty good. Tyson just was a very important piece but we feel that with defense we will win a championship.”

“The final trade was a very good trade because we added to our defense with Mark and Eddy, these two players are very hardworking and provide a lot of energy to the floor, and finally we got Kareem who will be a great fit backing up Hamilton. He has a great stoke and very good range on his shot. Losing Pippen, Haslem, and Clark will not hurt the team and we were able to get rid of Pippen and Clarks contracts which was also important.”

“All in all I think these trades were all very good. We went from being a team filled with good players who could score and rebound and play well as individuals (Davis, Camby, Chandler) and got some very good defensive, team players which is what we are trying to build around, defense and team success, not individual scoring averages or rebounds or 'how many time I get the ball' type of players but defensive minded, hard nosed, players with a lot of heart, and I think we were able to accomplish that.”
