NBA Live 2004 is one (big) step closer to the realism, but isn't perfectly realistic. But is (a lot) better than 2003, thats for sure...
The question here is, what the player wants? Is it the arcade or simulation? if its the first thing, than play 2003. Otherwise, 2004 rocks...
I want a good mix of the two. And the series has almost always delivered it to me... I want to see those crazy moves and great plays and those incredible last second shots, but I don't want to see them all the time... I want to get realistic statistics for my team and the opposing team. But I don't want to play 12 minute quarters, cause it takes too long.
Two games in this series have not delivered on this... NBA Live 2001 was very slow paced, but it did deliver "realistic" stats with 12 minute quarters. (Unrealistic when you had played the game long enough, but to start with) Live 2003 just gave us a game that had all the scoring and all the tough three point shooting and blocked shots swatted out of the arena, but it had very little resemblance of a basket ball game. It was fun and it was challenging in it's own way, but it was too fast paced and arcadish for my taste. It wasn't all bad.
But NBA Live 2004 delivers... I play 8 minute quarters and get fairly realistic results. The fg percentages are a bit high, but they have to be to get the scores in the 90-100 point range. The highest I've scored is 117 and lowest is somewhere in the 80 range, but usually I end up with around 100 points and that is realistic enough. The gameplay is not ultra boring as in Live 2001 or ultra aracadish like in Live 2003, but a good mix of them both.
It still has a lot to improve, but this is an excellent game after the last two PC releases...
