OMG Rasheed Wallace shot a mid-range jumper on me!!!

Postby deluxxe on Fri Oct 24, 2003 6:40 pm

OMG! i can't beleive the CPU actually took a mid-range jumpshot on me!!! i was so excited i nearly peed myself.
But then every other shot after that was a pro-hop layup that sweeps my defenders out of the way as per usual.
I've had it with this game. I've tried sooo hard to enjoy it. I think i've spent a total of 10 hours playing it and it's left me totally unsatisfied.
I don't think EA will ever learn.

I've tried ESPN bball and i don't like it either.
Tom Tolbert's commentating is a joke and the collision detection between the ball and the rim is atrocious. I like the fac that it actually gives you a more realistic basketball experience as far as shooting goes... but that's about all it has going for it. Live looks and sounds way better.

If ESPN had NBA Live's audio team and graphics team, i think that may be our answer.

untill EASports figures out that shooting 50-60% is not "in the game", i wont buy another Live game.

I'd really like to sit down in a room with the NBA Live developers and ask them, point blank, what they honestly think a realistic FG% in an NBA game is. I'd be curious to hear what they would say.

one word: sliders (especially gameplay sliders, game speed, fatigue etc.)

DM dressed my thoughts to words quite well... There are sliders with which you can lower the fg percentage if you want...

NHL 2004 took time to get used to it and it turned out to be a great game. Far more realistic then before. The players and the puck do actually feel like they are all part of the game.

NHL too has some big flaws in it's dynasty system. Hopefully fixing that will be a theme for EA next year... If they get the dynasty sheit right, well there will be no stopping them.

i hear you guys about the sliders, and i hear you guys about playing defense.

here's the thing though.
i lowered the shooting sliders and it definately helps lowering the FG%.
HOWEVER, when i do this it just becomes way too easy to destroy the CPU. We both end up shooting 40-45% from the field but i beat them by 10+ points because i play a way better game. balanced court shooting, less turnovers (because i don't jsut run into the lane pro-hopping through traffic every posession), etc... Not only that, it doesn't stop them from doing the pro-hop every possession. It just makes them miss it more often.

adjusting the sliders only helps me win. I want the cpu to play better basketball... not cheap basketball. Where's the challenge in clogging up the lane and making them miss their layups with sliders?

one other thing... Why does the CPU beat me down the court on fast breaks so often, yet, when i get a fast break, they all of the sudden run way faster than me? I guess player ratings have no bearing on the CPU getting back to stop a fast break. pretty lame if you ask me.
i remember this from the old lives, and i thought they finally fixed it in 2003. now it's back again.

all u gotta do is.....

Postby flylice31 on Sat Oct 25, 2003 6:47 am

all u gotta do for the fast break is just run in front of the person that is catching up on you.......this always happened in live 2000 too so just block his way when he's coming....it works.....just think like u'd do in real life......as for pro hopping.....as long as u stand in front of him and play defense....it'll prevent him from going towards the basket....it might be that ur so use to playing arcade like basketball that u dont think much about the fundamentals anymore....but i could be wrong

If you want to make it harder for you, increase the computer's defensive awareness, lower your field goal rating as well. Drop their field goal ratings, lower your defensive ratings, and then it'll be much more of a challenge to you. I've gotten it nearly perfect for 12 minute quarters most of the time, but then again, there's some random exceptions if a particular player gets hot. One problem I need to get worked out is the fouls...I've shot 60 foul shots in a game before, and the computer usually shoots 40. I mean, they're good foul calls, but too many are shooting fouls...I've been busy, so I haven't been tweaking it, plus I'm working on a dynasty in NCAA football with a couple friends, so I have to play those games...

Anyway, I digress. The gameplay in Live 2004 can be perfect on superstar (that's the key, make sure you're playing on superstar) if you tweak the ratings. Scoring too easy? Increase the computer's defense. The computer scoring too much on the prohop? Increase your defense. I haven't seen the problem with the prohop that everyone else has complained about, and either tha's because I'm good at D or I've adjusted the sliders right. Once I get them tweaked to perfection, or as close as I can get, I'll probably post them on the board.

Oh, as for the fast breaks...usually they can get one guy back...it's called passing to the trailer or lobbing it up. ;) Very handy...I usually get about 12 fastbreak points a game with the Raptors. Mo Pete to VC and vice versa is fun. ;)

Yeah me too, I'm playing in a superstar mode(with the cpu shooting is set to 48) with the rockets and I'm getting 12 to 14 fastbreak points. Just play tough defense on the cpu by pushing them and holding down the right anlog stick to force them to jumpshot. The only problem I had is defending the low post players.

I'll definitely be adjusting the sliders accordingly if I have to in order to make the game challenging yet realistic statistically. Though I'd first like to know: if you play on superstar and you don't adjust any sliders (apart from fatigue), what scores will be produced? If you play 12min, 10min, 9min quarters etc. what is the averages scores?

12 min. quarters I've had scores from 90-140...the 140 game was the crazy absurd amount of free throws game.

Can you choose how many games you play in a season (82, 58, 28 etc.) in Dynasty mode? Or do you have to play 82?

I'm gett'n da game in a week and I'll most likely play:

Dynasty
Chicago Bulls
(Current roster plus legend Jordan minus Rose)
Superstar
82 games per season
10 minute quarters (as long as this length produces average of 95ppg)
I'm playing Jordan all 40mins of every game.
Fatigue slider 50 (correct me if 50 sounds inaccurate for realism)
I'm not changing any other sliders cos I want to master da game as it is.
Am I allowed to FIRE Bill Cartwright?

In PC version, I think you can replace Bill with some other coach

i don't think anybody here(in this thread) said anything about jumpers being hard to make.
my original complaint was that the cpu doesn't take enough of them.
But i've had soime success with sliders, and, as someone pointed out earlier in this thread, if you hold down on the right stick on defense it makes it way harder for them to drive around you. This will actually force them into taking jumpers.

The game isn't even made by Americans. That should answer all your questions. That's like having Russians make Madden 2005.

Oh come on, There are plenty of people in Canada who love basketball, they're just harder to find. And we're not as hockey obsessed as people may think we are.
