After owning the game for a month...

Postby Colin on Sun Dec 14, 2003 12:55 pm

...I have come to my own personal conclusion that NBA Live 2004 is the most annoying one in the whole NBA Live line (that I've played, 96,98,99,00,01,03). We all know of the custom art bug but I can live without that. But the gameplay is just driving me crazy. Beofre you even think 'Change the sliders you idiot.' My problem with the game, that makes this game completly unplayable for me, is when your player automatically adjusts his shot in traffic. It has ruined the game for me, because you may have control over it, but the cpu does to and changes it for you everytime. I can't even make dunks with Shaq in traffic anymore because he automatically adjusts his shot. There's no point to this game, the Dynasty mode is a dissapointment so it's not like I can have a lot of fun just simulating that.
Live 2003 was amazing compared to this. Fast breaks I could live with, because not only the cpu could do them, you could to. But the cpu hardly ever changes their shot (I have their shot adjust frequency at something like 80, yet they change it about 3-4 times a game in 6 minute quarters.) And this is an absolutley tiny thing that would have been found at they had someone who knew what they were doing, and knew jack shit about basketball, test teh game for maybe 10 games. They would've have found it, and probably beable to change it in less than an hour (I don't know I'm not a programmer, but giving the user full-control over shot adjust can't take that long, hell they could even copy/paste from nba street 2 since they used that feature perfectly.
My game has now been retired to only playing with friends, at least it will happen to them too and it won't be one-sided.

There's other small prblems with the gameplay, like bouncing off the defender and not being able to freestyle at all during contact etc. But those are much more minor (at least to me.)

change your sliders.. idiot
j/k =)

people who get bored of nba live becuz they can win easily likes this game b/c of the adjusted shots.. making it harder for you to score sometimes EVEN when you finally get a clean layup/dunk opportunity .. if you have trouble scoring then
***change your sliders.. i'm serious this time
theres the adjusted shot percentage.. change it to 100 or something then you'll make them as much as you make a dunk**

i'm really surprised how many ppl like nba live 2003 b/c of the fast breakin you score 200 points and win by 80 points..
thats wut i was doing after a month of live 03.. i stopped playin after about a month in live 03

I have my adjusted shot percentage on 90, 10 won't make enough of a difference for me to go in the game and then quit out of frustation within 10 minutes. There's no denying it's still retarded that I have to put it that high to make lay-ups.

After having the game for a month myself, i find that the more i play it, the more i enjoy it.

Colin we asked for a realistic game, and we got one. adjusted shots happen in the NBA too, you can't just dunk on somebody in traffic, you have to up and under around them. The stats i've been getting in my franchise are realistic as hell! Even though it's frustrating not being able to control the shot control yourself, I think the adjusted shot is what the game needs for realistic stats.

But what you said at the end i agree with, when your player bumps off the defender is frustrating as hell! :x you'll be trying to run the offense with your PG...and your PF or C will become open for a pass or alley-oop...and you'll get bumped, do that strange ice skating walky thing and can't push pass while doing it! :x then it's too late and your Pf or C will have a man on him. The adjusted shots happen way too much for me IMO. Coaches always teach you to "take it up strong" and I'm not seeing that, I tried to start a franchise with the Suns and got sick of seeing Amare try to flick the ball underneath Ricky Davis. like the whole adjusted shot idea, but maybe if it happened more like 40% of the time instead of 90%. If EA was to release a patch that fixed this it would be a perfect game to me. I love everything else, the bouncing doesn't matter as much to me, I just turned up freestyle effectiveness and gain the ground back.

One thing I forgot, the gay little stumbling around that happens after every blocked shot or adjusted shot that means you can't get an offensive rebound.

My gripes with the game (and this is pretty much it) 1 = most annoying 5 = least
1. Auto adjust shot, every time.
2. Stumbling around
3. Bouncing
4. After and during the 'bounce' you can't freestyle
5. Custom art.

If you change the in-air collision slider, the cpu automatically adjusting your shot doesnt happen that much.

I'm pretty sure that if you turn down Adjusted Shot %, your player adjusts his shots less. It's more like Adjusted Shot frequency.

Guess why Tim Duncan and Kevin Garnett are impossible to stop in the post??? It's not because of their athleticism and dunking power... Oh, no... It's not making a lay-up after lay-up on their defensive guys... It's the hook shot! They have such long limbs that they can make a hook shot over anyone and that is what makes them so great.

Even Shaq can't get more then a half a dozen dunks in the game. One handed shooting is the key... And so it is in Live 2004... Dunking and laying it up in traffic is extremely difficult and with especially lay ups usually end up getting blocked or fouled. Dunk are mostly impossible unless you have really out played your man under the hoop. I don't know how it goes in the real NBA and how good the guys really are, but what bothers me about this is the fact that dunks get blocked too often. But then again you get to try a dunk too often. So it's an ok trade off. You can still get to the hoop too easy for a dunk...

And coaches tell people to take it hard to the rim and take it up decisively, well they do that so that once you are up in the air there will be no distractions no room for "what if's" and you do your thing and that's it. If you really could dunk like in the previous live games, well there would be so many more frequent injuries. Cause the guys would get pretty banged up under the hoop...

The game is realistic... How many times have you seen a Tim Duncan/Kevin Garnett dunk in the middle of traffic? Zero, zilch, none, well why do you do it in Live 2004??? The game is realistic...

And about that bouncing and pushing thing to make the offensive player trip balance, well that is too "quite" realistic. When you are handling the ball and you get a little contact from your defender you can do nothing until you first regain your balance. And this really does not bother me as you can do the same to the AI...

Hey,

the game is better than nba 2003 . But it is difficult to to play, better say to find the best sliders for the own game to play. (Y)

I use the sliders from Andrew, play man to man def no double the player no crash board and sometimes i can win a game. I agree teh game is really relastic so many have problems with the new game to play, i also too.

My biggest problems in the game:

- easy baskets. My player stands under the basket 2 feet away and he don´t hit the basket.. Args..... Even a center or point guard.
( any tips for this for better hiting near basket Sliders ?)

- overpowered pointguard. I look at the cpu pg...oh Baron Davis.....thats will be ugly for my team......

- hitting the "3" Hmm i have the impression that many players have big problems to hit the "3" also if there stands alone at the line and the player is a 3point shooter...

- the player don´t move to much in the offence, also i use a play sets. Mostly the guards and the sf are waiting at the 3 point line the c and pf are in the low post. it is rare that for expample that the sg cuts oneself in the zone so i can pass the pass to the sg.....even with playset :?

- i don´t know how to "dive" after the ball. Looks funny. :D

The ugly things (N)

- faces crazy very bad !
- fatigue Shaq plays 4 min. and he is exhausted somestimes.....to many hamburgers ?
- custom Art crash.....so no better faces.....
- missing ingame save

The game is really better than all other older nba versions. I hope EA makes a patch

Parts of the game are realistic. THe animations rock and I love the way the game moves and feels....it is damn near perfect minus some small things.

What Live needs to do next year is include COACHING STRATEGIES!!!!!

Not everyteam runs "freestyle offense." Not every PG jacks up 20 shots a game. Teams certainly do not just run don't court and take 3pt shot with 20 seconds left on the shot clock.

My beef with this game is strictly in the execution of NBA plays....Live is way off if they think NBA teams don't run plays everytime down the court and each team runs a different set (where people are positioned...very important where the PG is on the court and WHO is double teaming a great post player. Teams use the player guarding Kenny Anderson not the player gaurding Reggie Miller!!!!!

Live needs strategy next year and I would be tickled

Forgot

Colin try jacking up the adjusted shot foul frequency. Anytime your guy gets hit and adjusts his shot a foul will be called a majority of the time. That added realism to me and got my guys and the CPU guys going to the line more

Just use Ben's roster if you don't want the point guard jacking up all the shots. He set the primacy correct for the players and now the people who normally shoot actually shoot. Also the game starts with you in an offensive set instead of the freestyle offense which limits the fast breaking to actual fast breaks and not after every missed shot. This is the most realistic basketball game to date. I actually have realistic stats and scores and entertaining games. Slider adjustment is a must also. Set the fatigue effect to like 55 so that players sub in and out because of fatigue so that 6th men can have real 6th man stats

Metsis, those players may not dunk it every time, but they certainly don't bring the ball to their waist and flip it up. Most of my adjusted shots are coming from contact from behind which is annoying me. I see your point and I do use little jump shots and hooks but I'd like to be able to make a dunk over someone 5 inches shorter than me without adjusting my shot.

On contact from anyone no matter what size, which is my problem. Auto adjust only happens on contact for me at all. and Mine is at 60. I saw your previous tpic and changed it to 0, but It didn't help my problem at all, it just made me miss every single one.

there some minor stuffs of wondering

- hook-Shots....this shoot must very hart for everycpu player, because the fail rate are at 90 % Also Shaq can´t hit the basket with the hook-shot :?

- yesterday i found at the right side of the screen where the the clock is, a basketball woh was spinning, as Kobe plays a off. set . Whats this ???

But they might have to if they try to dunk over guys... I do have to agree that height difference should play a more apparent part in this, but it does not, not this year... It is only a game and it will always have it pros and cons when compared with the real thing...

It is a very good game... I enjoy it to the max. You always have to accept some facts that the game does "weird" to play the game properly and enjoy the experience. Take Live 2003 for example... Who didn't notice 75+ field goal percentages in a game and the 10 team rebounds you could get? Who didn't notice that the cpu was fast breaking all the time? Who didn't notice that you could fast break all the time too? Who didn't notice that each and every block went out of bounds or atleast 60 feet away? Who didn't notice that you could get to the hoop when ever you wanted to?

Are these facts realism??? Hell no... The fact is that it's been always too easy to dunk the ball in Live games and this time around they did something about it and I'm loving every second of it. You Colin liked live 2003 didn't you? You will enjoy Live 2004 even more, once you get past the idiocies of the game...

Live 2004 is way better and has dealt with, if not all, most of the complaints about Live 2003... The game will again be better next year... But I wouldn't go Live 2003 after playing 2004... 2004 is just simply put better and more realistic. 2003 had like nothing to offer to players who wanted realism.

If you cannot get over the few dumb things Live 2004 do... You should never play computer games, cause there will always be something dumb that will turn you off of a game. Remember in original doom you couldn't even jump and it still rocked... But some of you are so young that you have never experienced that. But those of us who have played with commodore-64 know exactly what I'm talking about.

They are games... They are made to entertain... Some games strive for realism, but the fact is that we don't have what it takes to make a realistic game yet...

I didn't mind the problems in Live 03 since you could do them to the opponent too, but you can't always make the oppoenent change his shot and throw up a bad one.

Live 2003 had issues that heavily favored the AI... Like the fact that while you were running the break and the cpu caught up to you from behind, your player would slow down considerably! The three point bonanza was too something you couldn't accomplish as easily as the AI while trying for a come back...

You can make the AI miss as many shots inside as you do... You just have to play good defense... If you get back on defense you can stop fast breaks almost too well.

Just get in his face... You need to fix your sliders if the AI never changes his shot... I am running at the default settings for such things and it is working out fine.

I make some bad and awkward looking shots from down there, but so does the computer... You hopefully know that the AI cheats on super-star mode!!! I play all-star and the game is good... I win some and lose some... I have good games with KG and I the bad games... As I play a little too fast paced game the rebounding numbers are divided too evenly among my players. So when I have Kurt Thomas and Kevin Garnett on my starting line up, neither one is averaging over 10 rebounds per game. I still grab around 40 boards per game... They really should make the game so that your Center and Power Forward and players with high rebounding ratings would be fighting for the rebound more often then players with low ratings.

This might get fixed with lowering the block ratio enough so more shots would make it to the hoop. And I get too few steals cause I play an aggressive defense and try to force the AI to take the long shots rather then the good hook shot from underneath.

Colin, I really don't care what you are saying and what your thoughts are on these... I know that you can't put the game down for too long and keep on playing it... Or if you think of going back to Live 2003, well you will notice that it is really inferior product when compared to Live 2004...

This is a good game... You can't put it down for too long... Atleast I can't.
