the SG spot

Postby alexboom on Mon Jul 12, 2004 6:53 pm

I just wanted to know if you manage to get correct offensive stats with your SG, and how you do it.

I'm still playing my Detroit Dynasty, I used 5 different SG in 5 years (RIP Hamilton, Stephen Jackson, Jamal Crawford ...) but none of them had correct scoring stats. I finally moved Chauncey Billups to the SG spot with the signing of Tony Parker, and he's the first to post correct offensive stats, but indeed he mostly scores when he's at Point Guard, and his scoring average dramatically dropped.

With the SG I can't create my own shoot and can't find the way to penetrate, while it's far easier with the four other spots.

So, have you any tricks? :)

yep, play using 96 bulls :proud:

anyways...
in my clippers dynasty.... in the first year, everyone was contributing, even bobby simmons, matt barnes..... but Q was doing nothing.... he just stood there, and refused to sign in the 2nd year :furious: .... (foreshadowing of things to come this year  :( ) so i just ended up signing some scrub to fill the starting sg spot.... and it didn't even affect my game much...

The first thing you absolutly must do, is shoot around with any player in practice mode. take ten shots from anywhere on the floor with any freestyle move before it, if you miss a single shot you're screwed and shouldn't even play the game any more. If you make all ten then your timing is on and you just need to know how to get open.

Fast breaks are a good place to start. Don't hotshot the ball to your SG strait off, give it to your PG and wait till he has a clear lane to the basket then either pass or alley-oop him.

Call for a drive to the basket, this will send the closest backcourt player to the ball handler to the paint, if you don't hit him there he'll cut back out picking his man off on one of your big-men, hit him just before he gets to the three-point line for a quick jumper.

Use motion offense. The play most often called has the SG run from one wing through the paint to the other wing, recieving picks from both big men along the way.

Another play i like, is to pass to the SG on either wing without starting his dribble, give your opponent a couple of fakes before running to the top of the key, then either stutter step or quickstop for the jumper. Not only is this a makeable shot, but you almost always get fouled. Be shure to start the dribble while faking, you get a good step on your opponent.

Try to force a dunk when you know you are about to get tied up, this also gets you to the freethrow line.

Pick and roll, use it often. Also a good way to get your SG's assists up.

For bigger guards, the box offense has a couple of post up plays for SG's.

I have several moves to not only create off the dribble, I can pass the ball around to get him open. The main idea is give it to your big man to attract attention, then try a simple kick out. Never shoot with a hand in your face. Theres some guys that jack 3's all game, and they make alot, but then they miss alot too. Freestlyle can be VERY powerful, just don't overuse it (like crossing over the air as you go upcourt hehe).

The simplest way is to give it to your big and then kick and rotate. But because defense scheming is terrible in Live, it becomes as cheap as pro-hopping all day long.

The main tip I have is play to your player's strength. You had Rip, right? Did you do off-ball switches and have him run around the court like crazy, like he does in real life? Because in order to emulate real life, that's what I did. It worked very well, the "picks" he runs are just his own teammates, even though they don't set a pick, the impact detection is pretty lousy too, so it works. Crawford is the type of guard you can take off the dribble or shoot the ball, as he's quicker than most guards and has a nice shot. Take it to the rack, stop and pop, etc.
Now you have Billups...call a lot of pick and rolls. Take it to the rack hard and get to the line (he's a great FT shooter). If not, take the 3 off the pick and roll. The key with Billups is to run the pick and roll or post him against smaller guys. You're probably thinking, what about driving? Well, Billups gets a lot of his drives off the pick, since that's the bread and butter of the Piston offense to start with. It's easier with Billups than Rip though, because Billups can hit the 3. The 2 loves to stand on the 3 point line, so try to get both Parker and Billups on the same wing. Drive with Parker, either using his speed/quickness or a pick. He'll get past both men, and if Billups is in the corner, his man will help out. Dish to Billups and he'll nail the 3.

Try calling a pick and roll, and then calling an isolation as soon as the pick is set.[/quote]
