Changing Division during Dynasty

Postby TheBigEasy on Sat Apr 24, 2004 3:17 am

I post that here, cause it is dynasty related ... :). I am well into the playoffs of my first season (as you can see in my dynasty thread) and I am fairly certain I will win the championship. Now I think it might be boring to do another season with the Hornets in the East and thought about starting a new dynasty, now with Portland in the West.

But I came up with another Idea. What about changing division with the Hornets? I have searched the database and there in the team.dbf the division is set. That question is mainly for Andrew, as he has the most experience with messing around with the database :D. I'd want the Hornets in the Midwest Division and Memphis in the East. Do I only have to change the rows "Conference" and "Division" for those two teams or do i have to change something else too? And when do I have to change it? at the beginning of the new season? Do I need to change the schedule also? Or is it maybe better to change the team number (17 for the Hornets and 12 for the Grizz) and let the computer sort out the rest?

I haven't tried this, so please backup your Dynasty before you start editing it. This is guaranteed to work, and is purely experimental. Tinker at your own risk.

So, after you make a backup of your Dynasty...

  1. Finish your current playoff, save the game after the NBA Finals.
  2. Edit the DIVISION and CONFERENCE fields so that the Hornets and Grizzlies switch places
  3. Edit the SEED so that there are 14 seeds in the West and 15 in the East, with no team sharing the same value.
  4. Load the Dynasty, proceed to the next season

If all goes well, the Grizzlies and Hornets should be switched, and the new schedule should be generated correctly.

Yeah of course I'll backup first and tinker at my own risk :D. But as long as you guarantee that it will work ... :).

Anyway ... thanks a lot, that sounds about right. I'll try and hope it works. I'll let you know.

See, this is why I should proof read things. I can't guarantee that it will work. It sounds OK in my head, but sometimes the game doesn't always like these kind of changes, especially to Dynasties in progress.

TheBigEasy, please let me know how this goes! I'm almost done with season three and I'd just some change up on things...personally with my Laker Dynasty, playing at the Staples Center 44+ times gets a bit daunting ;) (and more times than that if the Clippers can ever make it to the playoffs!)

That was quite a novel idea, TheBigEasy.

Well ... I have done exactly as you said ... and there was absolutely no effect what so ever :?

I have changed Divisions, Conferences and Seeds ... no effect. I was still in the East. I'll now try to make the changes after I proceeded, but doubt their will be any change. I guess the changes in the team.dbf would only take effect if I start a new dynasty ...

As I thought ... no effect even after proceeding. That means, team.dbf has no influence on ongoing dynasties.

Any ideas where I have to look to change division?

Well ... everything I tried didnt work. I even tried to open a new dynasty and change divisions. But it didnt work ... My guess is, it all has to do with the Team ID. As I have started the dynasty with team 17, everytime I change something it doesnt have the desired effect.

But I have found a way around it. I have proceeded to the new season and than changed the whole schedule for Memphis and New Orleans in the schedule.dbf. Just switched team ID's and it worked just fine. I am still in the Eastern Conference, but have now Memphis' matchups, meaning I play the Lakers, Mavericks, Spurs and all the other West teams 4 times a year now. Which was exactly what I wanted.

You will still play against the east teams in the playoffs!

Yeah ... but thats not a problem. I mostly wanted to play the WC teams more during the season. Ok, ideally I would have switched completely over to the WC including playoffs, but this is a compromise I can live with.

have you figured out a way to change teams during a dynasty?
I tried to edit the team.dbf file, but it wouldn't work. Like you said, editing the team.dbf doesn't seem to have any effect on the team you control.

It should be possible, just switch team ID's in the team.dbf. But than you will have to switch Team ID's for every player in the player.dbf too, because you would play with the players from your former team on the new. For example, when I switched teams in the team.dbf, all my Hornets players played on the Memphis roster and all Memphis players were on the Hornets roster. So you have to go into the players.dbf and change the teams and salary teams for each player of the two teams.

But to quote Andrew:
