Help! I cannot win, cannot shoot

Sat Apr 24, 2004 7:20 pm

I'm shocked that my record with Utah Jazz at superstar level is 3-31! I've been playing NBA Live since 95 and have managed to win the NBA championship each time with the lowest/weakest team at superstar. But with 2004, I cannot even win, even against similarly weak teams (default sliders).

My problem is I'm constantly missing shots, whether in the low post with K Clark or jump shots, even if unguarded. I've practiced a lot and during practice, my shots go in consistently (user control). Why is this happening?

I've noticed too that when I post someone down low and he gets double teamed, then I swing the ball to an open man (usually someone with good fg rating) , I'd shoot and the player would jump and the animation to jumpshoot would show then just when he is about to release the shot, he would pass it to another team mate who usually is not in a good position to shoot. Why does this happen often? Can someone tell me if you've encountered this kind of stupidity on your players? For example, Clark gets doubled team in the low post, so I pass the ball to Harpring who's open, he gets the ball, I make him shoot, he'd jump to shoot, but instead will pass the ball at the peak of his jump. Why?

Please someone help me. I've read the tips and most of the posts here, but it's just look impossible to win.

Utah Jazz lineup
Clark
Kirilenko
Ellis
Harpring
Jackson
Bender
Bosh
Rice
Stevenson
Strickland
Bell
Ostertag

it really is tough to win using the default sliders... i can not remember my record using the default sliders, but is sure is ugly... use andrew's sliders or ben's sliders and the gameplay will improve and winning will be easier than before... and play at all-star first, when all-star becomes too easy for you then change to superstar..that's what i did..

But what frustrates me is when I pass the ball to an open jumpshooter and I press jumpshoot, he jumps and sometimes, instead of shooting he would pass the ball to someone not in good position to score. Why does the player do such stupid move? If I wanted him to pass while jumping, I would have pressed pass, but with such happening, it waste an open shot which is bad considering i hardly score. Anybody else noticed this? What do you do?

Set the CPU to shoot your shots.

hmmm.. i never encountered that... maybe do what was said in the above post.. set the shot control to cpu rather than user.... or practice more

i have been losing a fair bit but my record isnt that bad. i would say keep prqctising but theres 1 thing which bugs me about this game

its not hard, its easy. the only way u lose is if the opposition hit stupid shots and u miss layups and dunks

Yeah honestly there are so many exploits/overpowered things you can do in the game, but I have to resist using them.

For example, one thing I wish to see is smaller men taking the charge on backdowns. I don't mean doing it every single time like some people do online, I mean if you do it at just the right time and your not that big of a guy, you can get a charge.

That's the problem with all video games, especially sports sims. In the end human intelligence is always going to prevail over artificial intelligence. That's another advantage of having the sliders, of course. Not only can we tinker with the gameplay so that is more realistic, we can also tip the advantage in the AI's favour if we want a new challenge.

Thats why I think they need to make games that adapt to you. I'll never forget, years ago, when I played Descent™ on my playstation. When the robots shot energy balls at me, I would slide sideways out of danger. Eventually I was completely baffled when the robots used my tactics against me, after I shot a concussion missle at one and watched as it slided out of the way..

ok, im sounding like an idiot. what are sliders?

Sun Apr 25, 2004 8:34 pm

The sliders can be found in Gameplay Settings. They are used to control various elements of gameplay, such as the game speed and the effectivity of Freestyle moves.

are there reccomended sliders?

Several, including a discussion about the results and possible tweaks to suggested sliders.

I can win now! Thank you

I followed some suggestion given above and they made an impact. The very first thing I did was chang to cpu shot control (before I've used user shot control, though I will go back to it in the future). It seems that I adjust my players shot too often even if they are about to go for a dunk. The second adjustment is on defense -- stealing inbound pass. I've gotten more than 10 steals per game due to stealing inbound passes which leads to layups.

The 3-33 record ended up like 20-36 (including cheating of course, meaning I sometimes restarted games that I was about to lose). But I didn't make the playoffs.

Starting the dynasty on superstar with Utah Jazz , currently 4-4. Lineup:

Clark OR 63
Kirilenko 71
Ellis 57
Harpring 66
Jackson 59
Kaman 57
Moiso 59
Padgett 60
Stevenson 52
Strickland 59
Bordchardt 47
Girilicek 60
