How to have less than 29 teams in Dynasty Mode?

going into season mode it gives you the option to edit the divisions. it let you do that in the old 'franchise mode' of NBA Lives past. there is no such option when entering Dynasty Mode.

i've tried a few dbf tricks like copy and pasting teams.dbf and schedule.dbf from a saved, division-edited season to a saved dynasty, but the game crashes. anyone have any ideas?

Dynasty Mode doesn't seem to allow greater than or fewer than 29 teams. All attempts to add extra teams or play with fewer teams have resulted in crashes.
