Midrange shots look like crap

Tue Jan 27, 2004 7:55 am

Whenever I shoot a midrange shot with a big man, the release looks hideous. He always releases way too quickly and the shot never goes in. It looks like a cock-back and shoot all-in-one action without consideration for releasing at the peak of the jump. (BTW, I'm using USER shooting) NBA 2003 had the perfect jump shot animation. There was a long "travel" time between jumping, upward motion, release, downward motion, and land. It rewarded the player for knowing when to release.

Yet another complaint about 2004.

You beat me to the punch I was just about to post this. I wanted to know how to change the shooting animation for some big men namely Jermaine O'Neal. He shoots more mid-range jumpers than most big men like Shaq, Duncan and others. Dirk is 7 foot but his shooting animation is like a guard so its not the size that makes O'Neal shoot that way. I even tried changing his Scoring area, position, fg ratings and still nothing. Even Walter McCarty, 6-10, has a guards shooting animation. If anyone knows what to edit, please help

Last year the shooting animation was controlled by player height and weight. Anyone over 6'7" and 235 pounds (if I recall correctly) had the different "big man" shooting style/animation.

Tue Jan 27, 2004 11:16 am

Yeah Andrew that was true for last year but McCarty is 6-10, Nowitzki is 7 foot and they have the guards shooting animation this year. I'm going to keep tampering with things until I can figure this thing out.

Tue Jan 27, 2004 11:59 am

That's true. Nowitzki is also listed at 240 pounds. There must be another value or attribute somewhere.

I thought it gave them the guard release if they had good range and had a good 3point rating. Dirk and McCarty shouldn't have the big man releasa anyways. Also you have to hold the shoot button longer for the big men to release properly.

i think all the shooting positions give the shot a higher percentage (3pt FG, Range, FG)

cause when i raised Carlos Boozer's FGs and range, he started shooting normal... ;)

Radmanovic shoots like big man although he has the 3 pt icon. I think it can be a field in dbf file

If its not a position artibute (only forwards and Centers seems to do that kind of movement), it must be one of the dribbling or speed artibutes. I think it about dribbling but im not very sure.

Well with Jermaine O'Neal I raised both his FG and 3 to 99 and his Scoring Area to the same one as Dirk and still nothing. I've tried editing different things in the dbf's too but still no luck. I'll try the dribbling attribute next

It worked  I gave Jermaine O'Neal a FG rating of 81 (to get rid of the quick release), Passing of 62 and Dribbling of 62 and he now has the guards shooting animation for shots outside of 5 feet.

Awww but then he's such a good shooter

Good work LBM. (Y)

Had no idea I was brewing such a storm. Until you guys brought it up, I didn't even notice the difference between big man shooting and little man shooting. Now that you mentioned it, yes there is a huge animation difference.

This is so stupid. Everyone in the NBA (with few exceptions like Miller and Bill Cartwright way back) shoots the same way no matter what % they shoot. Only shot probability should be affected by FG rating, not animation. EA went nuts with variables.

Not to be pedantic, but not everyone shoots exactly the same way. But I know what you mean - with a few exceptions, most players have a similar shooting form.

I created Andres Nocioni and Dejan Bodiroga.
Altough they have some similar ratings, Nocioni has a different shot release (and worse in my view).
Nocioni has range 24' and Bodiroga 25'.
I don't remember what scoring areas I gave both but it could have a effect on the shot release. Nocioni gets more open looks at the baseline and Boiroga at the corners or center of the arc.

All you have to do with taller players is hold down the shoot button longer.

I figured this out with Yao. Before, when I try a jumper with him, i looks like he kinda "flings" the ball towards the basket.

But I held the button longer than I usually would for a guard, and he shoots it normally. :P

Hey Metalheart,

can yoy post the ratings you are using for Nocioni?? I was thinking about creating "Chapu" but I didn't know wich ratings set to him.

By the way, anybody knows if it's there a roster path for NBA Live 2004 that includes him??

Thank you.

That's cool, maybe it means that big guys are supposed to have slower releases?

Sat Feb 07, 2004 1:23 am

YEah thats truE!!! You have to hold the jumpshot button a lot longer.

It all depends on the DRIBBLE rating and WEIGHT (height doesnt matter).

If you have a player with 230 pounds or less weight, they have a quicker release (good animation) and can do the pro hop ebven if they have a low dribble rating. Im not sure how low though. I think it's at least 30.

If a player's weight is above 240 pounds, he should have a dribble higher than 50 to be able to do the pro hop and have a quicker release on their jumper.

just try holding the shoot button longer,
and if u do it properly with tim duncan he banks his shots in

plus try increasing the dribbling rating

Sat Feb 14, 2004 4:52 pm

Huh, didn't know that. Figured if I held the button longer, he'd be on the way down and shot % will plummet. Was so tired of Duncan flinging baskets at the hoop. My big men have no mid-range game whatsoever. It's either a dunk/lay-up/3 foot shot or it's not going in.
