IDEA: A Cyberface/Jersey Super Combo Pack

Postby KnickNut3 on Sun Nov 16, 2003 12:16 pm

Hey. I got this idea last year, but it was too late to execute. I wish I had the time to do it, but don't right now--it shouldn't be too much of a problem, though:

Create a combo pack of the best cyberfaces, jerseys, and shoes that people release... kind of a compilation "best of" patch, that is constantly growing. It shouldn't be too hard... just combine the files in one zip and create one big bat file that would include the blotch/eapatch whatever it's called to all the files at once. We'd just need some of the best patchers to consent to its inclusion with their thanks in a special introductory file that attributes all the included patches.

For someone that already downloads and tries all the patches, this wouldn't be too hard. For the rest of us, we don't have time to DL all of them individually and end up not enjoying many of them at all, so this would make life a lot easier, let more people enjoy good patches, and just improve the patching community. If we start now, it will never be too big of a job--just every couple weeks add the new gems, just like Andrew updates the rosters every few weeks.

Well, that's my 2 cents. Just wish I had time to execute it. Hope a patch enthusiast is willing to take it on :).

P.S. If that's not feasible, perhaps the top patchers could just make compilation patches of their own work?

the problem with big patches is that they kill the sites they're hosted on... they're bandwidth killers.

instead of complaining how hard it is to download a bunch of small patches, people should just overcome their laziness.

Tony, if people do that, you will need just as much bandwith as you need with a big patch.

The point is (and I also mentioned the exact same thing KnickNut3 brings up here a few weeks ago) that especially if you don't patch the game for a few weeks you're so far behind on patches that it really takes too much time and effort to grab them all and update your game. It would be much more convenient for the user to have bigger patches that include more changes at once.

And I am sure you will find places to host the files. If the patches are good, there are always sites willing to mirror.

if such a big file is regularly updated by small additions, as pointed out here, people would still have to download a 50mb+ file for a couple of measly updates. which = draining bandwidth.

Well, then perhaps a monthly patch with only that month's changes, or, a monthly patch and an overall patch, that way, if you're updated up to December and January rolls around, you only grab the January update, but if you haven't gotten anything, you grab the full thing.

But, in the end, there will be no additional badwidth used, except for a few more people that download that wouldn't have gotten anything before. On the other hand, others that download everything will only download the good stuff now, effectively saving bandwidth.

And calling a plan that would save people time and allow more people to use patches is not a matter of laziness. This is making the people that spend, say, 5 hours on their patching spend 5 and a half, and the much larger population, instead of having to take hours to download every patch and run every update and start the game each time to make sure it's not corrupted, can just do it at once. This is NOT laziness, especially when it can be avoided :)

Don't get your hopes up. Personally I'm doing a huge 50-90s allstars update, but i doubt anyone else would be doing packs or anything.

Tony I'm definitly looking forward to your patch. my only plausable solution for the "mega patch" might be if more people submitted and rated the downloads in the download section of nlsc. then people could download the best possible cyberface for the player or players of their choice. last years rating were plagued with a download only having 1 or 2 votes (probably by the creator) giving it a 10 rating, i would download it, and it would look worse then something my dog coughed up. dont get me wrong, i also thought about the possibility of this super patch, but as others have already stated, you gotta think bandwiths and the difficulty of updating it. i just think the nlsc has given us the tools for rating submissions, but we havent used it to its full potential.

Hey Tony... When you do the big update on the 50's-90's all stars, would it be possible to add, Muggsy Bouges or Manute Bol?
These guy's were great players who kind of got forgoten! They may not be considered an "A-L-L S-T-A-R" but you could add them as backups or somthing!

It's definetely worth a try in my opinion because I think all of us gamers out there would be sycked if we could play with these guy's on our teams!

Let me know what ya think!
