Scrap Live?

Mon Mar 24, 2003 12:35 am

I'm not a baseball fan...but from what I understand EA completely got rid of their Triple Play Baseball series and replaced it with a brand new game called MVP Baseball.

Also, from what I understand...the NBA Live series has paled for years in comparison to the effort and quality put into EA games like Madden and FIFA Soccer. EA Sports BIG...which created the NBA Street game...also put more care into their first release then Live receives every year.

The NBA Live engine is flawed in a number of ways. The computer still uses super-speed, "sticking" to your players...and now blatant shoving to stop you from scoring on Superstar mode. The franchise mode has a completely and horribly out-of-whack free agency system...draft picks can't be traded...the computer can be raped in trades...player development is off.

Maybe...it's time to give up on this engine and framework for the basketball game and get serious? By all accounts...with the exception of a few people...the NBA Live team should be fired and replaced with people from BIG or other series who are as obsessive about basketball as the Madden and FIFA teams are about football and soccer.

Frankly...I'm tired of requesting dozens upon dozens of tweaks...overhauls...new features...and OLD features each year. It might be time to do away with the root of the problem and not just the symptoms.

Maybe EA should focus on releasing a completely NEW game...MVP Basketball or whatever...for 2005. People from the Madden and FIFA teams and EA Big can begin work on that game now...giving them two years to get together a new framework while the NBA Live team works on their swan song...Live 2004...before being moved to other projects, switched to the new team or outright fired. Freestyle control, the ratings system and one-on-one mode can be kept...but really everything else could probably be thrown out.

NBA games should be easier to make...there are only about 400 players to manage at any given time compared with well over 1,000 in the NFL and world soccer. The draft is smaller than the NFL. There aren't multiple world leagues to be simulated as well as a world cup like FIFA. Basketball is also the most popular sport in the country. The Baseball game has already been overhauled. There's no excuse for EA's basketball series to be the stepchild of their sports label. Maybe it's time that we stop asking for tweaks that seem to never come and start asking for a new game?

Just something to think about...

I readed your post and i thinked about it, and i agree. Basketball IS more popular than NFL, Fifa, NHL or Baseball games. They just have to understand how much profit they would get if game would be everything people are talking about. EAsports staff should work more as team, wich dosn't mean that they must stop developing other series. Maybe they think if game would be perfect then next year someone wouldnt buy it, but come-on, then game must be very good. And if they just dont have time to develop new features and systems every year then release new game after every 2 years. Then online leagues would last longer and game would make huge step ahead after every release. EA, please start working for mony and develope something new because time goes on and real game develops, so should virtual games.

yeah, i agree, except on FIFA, FIFA2003 sucks, it's not quality, i also play FIFA and i visit soccergaming forums and everyone there thinks the same, FIFA is made by EA Sports Canada and it seems that they know
nothing about soccer, the gameplay of live2003 is ok compared to
fifa2003, no offence but i think that peope in north-america know nothing about soccer and fifa should be made by south-americans or europeans...

just wanted to clear that...

back to live: i think that the EA guys should, like you said, put some effort in making the game, the guys should watch hundreds of games to improve the gameplay, the dunks and the moves should be from the arenas not the playgrounds and if they really think that we want arcade then the shouldn't make NBA live anymore, cause we have got NBA Street...

god damn! it should be a basketball simulation, even the word franchise should point that out...

sigh...

Good idea EG... and while the Madden, FIFA and EA BIG people are making MVP basketball... the old NBA Live people can keep trying to make NBA Live and we can have BOTH versions :).

Well, I just have to say that the game has gone downhill since the original team was fired. They were fired during development of Live 2001... And thus Live 2000 really is the best and most balanced product that's out there. I didn't see the logic then and I certainly don't see it now.

The system is not all bad and a total overall would be a waste of time, but alot of work needs to done. It needs to go more indepth into the world of NBA basket ball... And I mean NBA! Not just basket ball... NBA has a lot to offer it just needs to be learnt and implemented.

Live 2003 didn't actually bring anything new to the game except the freestyle controls, which really don't work when play with the keyboard... The game needs more depth!
