BREAKING NEWS ON THE COMPETITION!!

Postby Goodz on Thu Aug 14, 2003 10:33 am

for those of us who have been talking about flagrant and technical fouls in a basketball game and wether its possible to impliment or necessary, this should interest you.. ESPN has revealed one of their secrets and its something that i doubt live will have...

As we move into the realm of defense, IGN quotes of a "mystery bar," in it's First Impressions article. Each player will have a colored meter beneath them at all times. It somehow ties into player performance, defense, and fouls. The bar also has a lot to do with flagrant fouls that are being added this year. If a player gets angry a lot during the game the bar rises. If it gets full u can be hit with a Technical Foul or u can hit someone and get hit with a Flagrant Foul. The most interesting to hear is this bar is a "One-on-one matchup said to be inspired by Virtua Fighter." This could only mean a quarrel with a referee, coach, or another play could maybe even result in a technical foul being blown on a player.

this is what ESPN NBA Basketball (NBA 2k4) has to offer.

on one hand, it shouldnt be in a game because it focuses on the negative side of basketball (unsportsmanlike behaviour etc.)
but on the other, it would be damn fun to play a game and know that emotions are tied into the situation of the game.

what do you guys think..

Come on, that's unnecessary.

I guess the NBA have relaxed their policy on technical fouls. Doesn't sound too bad, but I guess it depends on what makes the bar fill up. If it's too easy to fill up the bar and get a technical it wouldn't be realistic.

Personally I love the idea.
I'd love seeing Rasheed Wallace trying to dunk..get fouled..no call..and his bar go sky-rocketing!
Think of the possibilities! You'd have to really start managing your players and pulling them out like a real NBA coach. :D

It would have to be regulated by a rating though. Tim Duncan should go on a Sheed-like tirade if he doesn't get a foul call.

oh, maybe this wasn't breaking news for everyone  my bad

but i agree with Andrew. this is a promising feature, IF it's implimented properly. it would be stupid to see John Crotty filled with rage.. and a flagrant/technical foul doesnt happen every single game with every single player. there should be a rating to indicate the rate of which a players anger will go up as Andrew stated earlier.

I don't care what ESPN is doing with their game...

But the point on this is that the NBA has loosened their reigns on the game makers, so this really opens up some possibilities. I wonder what else have they released from their clutches...

We could finally see realistic player salaries, we could actually see technical fouls and flagrant fouls again... EA is keeping their lips tight on the features of this game, which is good in my mind.

But the ESPN's anouncement could possibly trigger some sort of a response from EA anyway or was this response the "ten player free style" thingy.

EA's game will be best, cause it's the only one for the PC and the only one I'll ever see here in Finland.

I still rather dont c the techs and flagrant fouls in the game, especially not with a bar, it's true they occur a lot but imho they would also spoil some of the fun, especially one-on-one combat or what was that kinda fighert thingy, it's realistic i admit but i just rather not see them in the game, cuz it will interrupt the gameplay just too much, i'd like to play a fluid uninterrupted game, but of course if it's an option that can be turned on and off, bring it on (y)

Fighting shouldn't be in the game. There aren't enough fights in a season to make fights in a basketball video game realistic. If you want a game where you can fight, buy a fighting game. The most exciting element of basketball is not unsportsmanlike behaviour such as fighting.

Techs wouldn't be so bad if implemented correctly. Flagrant fouls of course are already in the game.

I have seen one flagrant foul in Live 2003, and god knows how many games have I played. So if there is like one flagrant foul for every 300 games, that's as good as not having them implemented.

In my honest opinion, there are no flagrant fouls in Live 2003, wish they make a return in Live 2004.

Has anyone reached the rare "two"-club on these???

I've seen one, the result of an intentional foul.

I saw one player get injured when there was two minutes left in the game. It was weird as I had never seen it before.

It's a good addition but i don't think its necessary. The refs in a computer game doesn't make bad calls like in a real game so why add a tech meter or whatsoever.

I guess such a feature is basically just another challenge. Pull an angry player out of the game, or risk having him ejected. If that player happens to be your go to guy, then you'll have to change your gameplan accordingly.

now that's a situation i would love to have in my game.. those of you who are like me and kinda WANT something bad to happen to your team (big injury etc) so that theres a challenge, know what i mean.

Yes i do know what you mean, i kinda want bad things to happen to my team or something in the game and then get down by a lot than have to fight my way back, than it comes down to the last 10 seconds or something, i love when stuff like that happens in a game.

it would be great because thats another factor that determine a outcome of game. theres been many cases wheres start complaining lose focus of a game and the momentum or tempo of a game
