How To Easily Create a Custom Team

Postby Repole on Wed Jan 28, 2004 11:39 am

I needed a break from working on the street add on so i got bored and started writing this up since I think a lot of people would be interested. PLease sticky this Andrew, thanks :!:

NOTE: You must know how to do some basic dbf editing through db commander, cdbf, or any other dbf editing prgrams.

Step 1: Creating Your Team
The first step of making your custom team is picking out what players you want to be on your team. either create them, take them from free agency, or take players from other team. Make sure these players are in free agency unless it's a player you want from another team but you dont want that team to lose them. For example if you want paul pierce on your team but you dont want the celtics to lose him leave him on the celts for now....

Next go into teams.dbf and copy the row with all the bobcat's information and paste it at the bottom of the teams.dbf file. Change the team name and city to what every you want it to be. Then change the team number to one that hasn't already been taken (this varies since some rosters include custom teams).

Now go into players.dbf and find the players you want on your team again. If it's a player you want from another team but you dont want that team to lose them copy the row with this player in it to the bottom. Now change all the players TEAM and SALARYTEAM field to what ever your team number is.

If you want a coach for your team you'll have to go into coaches.dbf and add a line for your coach. I suggest you look at the Coaches editing guide to make this easier for you. Unless you have a cyberface made for your coach you'll have to use a generic one...

Part 2: Art

Your not done yet my friend. it gets a bit tricky here. If you have logos, jerseys and art for your team read section one, if you plan on just using the 90's team art or another teams art read section 2.

Section 1: Ok this is the hardest part of making the team. go into teamgear.dbf and add lines for at least a home and away jersey (if you have practice jerseys or alternate jerseys feel free to add those in) I suggest you look at the Team Gear editing guide to make this easier for you. Now go back to teams.dbf and change the two letter abbreviation to match the abreviation of your art files (make sure it isnt already uesd). Now either import the art through ea graph/viv magic or use custom art, either way it should work....

Now hopefully you have a court to use, if you dont' extract the 90's one or what ever and rename it to match your 2 letter abbreviation and then reimport it/ use custom art. Now once you've done that go into currentdb and find the locations.dbf add a line at the bottom and name your arena what ever you want (don't forget the number you use for ID). Now go back to teams.dbf and find the field LOCATIONID make the number there match the one that you added in the locations.dbf file. See the bottom of these instructions now.

Section 2: If you want to use another team's jerseys and logos because you don't have any art for your team to use, simply go into teams.dbf and change the two letter abbriation to match the two letter abbreviation of the team who's art you want to use. Find the field LOCATIONID and make sure it also matches with the team who's 2 letter abbreviation you used. Then go into teamgear.dbf and add lines for at least a home and away jersey.

Step 3: You're almost finished.

Now enter the game and load up the roster you added your team into. if you go to the reorder roster screen your roster'll probably look really wierd and messsed up. To fix this simply sign then, if you want to, release that player. Now you can reorder your roster and do what ever you want with it. Save your roster and thats it. You've successfully created a custom team  Have fun!

sign a player then release him to make ur players show up, thats step 3. as for jerseys, i did leave something out. you have to go into teamsgear.dbf and add lines in for each jersey. (use the teamgear.dbf guide on the main nlcs page...)

Not unless you remove another team from Dynasty Mode and switch the TEAMIDs. Dynasty Mode doesn't not work with more than (or fewer than) 29 teams.

I don't think anyone knows for sure. It's possible there is a new, higher limit, but I don't think anyone's encountered a limit since the official patch was released.

i know this was asked a while ago but there isnt a custom team limit...how ever when u start using numbers with 3 digits like 100 for your teamnum the game will crash.so basicly the game can handle 100 teams...

:D Is there a way that someone could JUST create a team and POST it on the forum for others to download.

I am not to computer savy, I read how to create a team, but still
am finding it EXTREAMLY hard to do it.
I would be glad to download any created team, to play against any
nba team in a season or dynasy.
THIS WOULD BE SO COOL

I wish NBA LIVE 2K5 would simply be more like MADDEN in regards
to CREATE A TEAM.
But because of alll the BUGS and ISSUES in 2004, I am almost reluctant
to purchase another version of NBA LIVE.
It seems to me that EA is not taking the time to make the game up to par in it's developments.

MADDEN, is a foundation of what a sports game should be like.
I thought that EA SPORTS was ONE company, meaning, that the
MADDEN and NBA LIVE games, were created by the same people.
I WAS WRONG.

I wish they would work together,,NBA LIVE could be as STRONG and MADDEN, if this were the case.

THEREFORE, I BEG anyone of you WONDERFUL people to POST your created teams, for those GAMMERS like me that don't know have the SKILLS thay you GREAT people have.

I would like a team called the MARTINSVILLE BULLDOGS,,team colors are main---RED, with WHITE trim.

Oh well, this is just a SAD, suggestion from a UNSKILLED owner of NBA LIVE 2004.

THANKS FRIENDS :D

I am following these instructions step by step but my custom team isn't showing up with the other rosters.

I am using CDBFW and creating the 1979 Lakers. The CITYNAME is:
'79 Los Angeles. I hope using the year with the city isn't a problem.

I put my created team at the bottom and numbered it TEAMNUM 75 which was open. I went to section 2 and since I am using the 86-87 Lakers uniforms who are TEAMNUM 59. I copied their home and away jersey info in TEAMGEAR for my custom team.

The problems I ran into were that the team doesn't show up when I scroll through all the rosters. Also, I have 6 created free agent players that I assigned to the team, but when I try to access these players in FREE AGENTS they are there and their team says LAL, but I can't pull them up and edit them.

Any help would be appreciated. Once I get through this I'll be able to make a few more custom teams. Thanks.

Thanks for the help, much appreciated.

My team shows up now and I can access and edit my created free agent players.

I had a little setback with the uniforms, and found out I switched HOME and AWAY with 1986-87 and I got those funky bright reds with big green letters. I switched back to HOME and AWAY and now everything looks cool.

I was able to create the 77 Blazers, 78 Sonics, 78 Bullets, 80 Lakers, 80 Sixers, 83 Lakers , 83 Spurs, and 84 Celtics, 86 Rockets, and '92 Dream Team.

I'm also getting more familiar with editing the database. I fixed Wilt on the 72 Lakers with a correct yellow headband (it was made purple by mistake) and his yellow shin pads.

I made some Historic custom faces too like DJ, Sikma, Hayes, Nixon, Wilkes, Sampson, Gilmore, etc. and also some shoes like the old nikes, ponies & adidas.

The procedure is basically the same, however I've updated my tutorial for use with NBA Live 2005-07.

Old topic, I know...

Newbie, yes!! Though, I am very familiar with dbf editing, but I had a question about "un-editing" in Live 2004.

Basically, I have a created Team which I cannot delete from the actual game itself, though it is nowhere to be found in the dbf commander after deleting from all databases/saves in My Documents Folder, teamgear.dbf, teams.dbf, team.info. So, when I start up the actual game disc, the Team still appears there. Do I need to maybe edit the save.dat file somehow? Is there a hidden registry or something for created teams?

I am sure it is something small which I overlooked, I searched the boards here for answers (as I have done a thousand times before), but this time I found nothing.

Help appreciated, thanks much!!

You'll probably need to restore the dbf files in all the database folders (originaldb, workingdb, currentdb etc) and load the original rosters. If all else fails, you might need to reinstall the game.

Great, thanks Andrew - It worked!! A reinstall did correct that "problem".

...though, I had to do a few other things also - Move those players on that team to Free Agents via dbf (#29 Roster), then (on game menus) scroll through the Edit Player Feature, then the Reorder Roster, and the "Sign Free Agents", and the team simply disappeared. Thanks Much!!
