Prelude to IDEA

Stats in 2004 are horrible, period. I've just started season with Suns on Superstar (my slider alterations, 7min quarter, excellent results, but still getting hammered by cpu, though), and stats are awful. Duncan is leading the league with 38 ppg, and that's just to get it going! :) Rebounds are more-less ok, but assists are not. There are too many overrated and underrated players. EA suck donkey balls for making stats systems for years. How about making changes. I'd be happy to help the NLSC team if any is needed.

Let's make players statistics accurate. It's possible. NBA @ ESPN.com (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/index) and NBA.com's Efficiency rating system can be helpful (http://www.nba.com/statistics/default_r ... Query.html).

EFF ratings are letting us know who is who in NBA. Top 50 players are displayed. There's a simple EFFICIENCY FORMULA: ((PTS + REB + AST + STL + BLK) - ((FGA - FGM) + (FTA - FTM) + TO)) / G. It's should be good enough for the Live if it's good enough for the NBA.com :)

Ok, I'm getting a bit to wide on explaning this thing...

Top 50 is there, let's make the difference in the game, those 50 are more less the real top 50 players (injured stars, webber, stackhouse etc, should be added, based on the last year performances). All the other players should be graded lower than these guys. But not drasticly as in Live 2004.

note: la lakers should be rated differently, too many superstars so they have lower ratings than last year, but it's the way they play now (and lose here and there :)). kings without webber are different team, and so on. This could be the next topic to discuss.

ESPN gives even more inside stuff. Power rankings (EA's rankings suck, most rookies are overrated, teams also, and a lot teams are averaging 120 ppg on default setings 12 min simulation, cleveland for instance...), Team stats (offense and %, adj. % stats), Individual stats, etc.

There's a lot to be done, but it's possible to make this good game even better.

I haven't experienced simulated stats like that when I've tested the rosters. Still, I'm always willing to improve the roster wherever possible...but I'm afraid I'm a little lost. Are you suggesting player stats be edited (there are no Dstats this year), or the player ratings be edited?

Well, I mean player ratings (stats will change also? correct me if I'm wrong, I'm no expert in editing dbf's).

This year biggest problem are the star players, they are too good compared to the rest of the players.

But tell me, was the Dstat editor or the field in data base file which transformed ratings into percentage or just the raw number?

If this is complicated, try adjusting the rosters, and players based on their game this year (EFF rating). e.g. Devean George isn't that good :) He's like 5th option on offense, but in game he's wild! I had problem with him last year too! :)))

There are various statistic fields in players.dbf, and there are also ratings fields. In-game player performance is determined by ratings.

Dstats were statistic fields that controlled simulated performance. Players would have similar simulated statistics to their Dstats. Dstats are not used in NBA Live 2004.

I'm still unsure what you're suggesting regarding the efficiency ratings. The best method is to adjust ratings based on other statistics. I do not use any stats-to-ratings formulas as I prefer to personalise the player ratings wherever possible, though I do equate FT% to FT rating.

I hate the nba.com efficiency rating. It's weak. Though at least they fixed it this year and are subtracting Turnovers instead of adding them.

Along with FT%, you could follow EA's lead Andrew, and rate players passing based on their assists per 48.

the main thing andrew should concentrate is to up stats to underrated players (even some star players!), and kickdown some overrated fools

i was thinking of working on some kind of stats to ratings type system using microsoft excel...

whereby all you need is player stats from different leagues (i.e. england or spain) or even college players or players from the lower american leagues whom have joined an nba team....

basically enter the stats and then using formulas ratings will be automatically caluculated

for example lets say a player "christian templeton" from england has been signed by the magic (yeah right!) he played in the english division one league and these were his stats...

GAMES-30 FIELD GOALS-100/271 3PFG-38-80

From these stats we could say he shot 39.6% from inside and 47.5% from the outside we could go further and say (just as a rough guide to get my point across, obviousley tweak it further) that he shot 43.55% from a jump shot (47.5+39.6/2=43.55).....

we could now enter these stats in and try to come out with ratings (using excel remeber)

Inside = we need to find out and nba average for field goals, and work out how far this statistic is from average, lets says the avergae is 45% his percentage is 3.95% below average and the rating are now between 0-100 50 being average and because he is 3.95 (round upt to 4) below average we could say he is 46 inside,

we could further tweak this formula so it includes other ratings like points per game height (taller guys do have an advantage down low), posistion etc etc,

we could do the same for rebounds find a league average formulate stats to give us a reboudning rating, and then tweak the formula to include alterates like weight (can be a slight adavntage) years pro, quickness, posistion,



you could then use this for you rosters or the like

I prefer not to use any stats to ratings formulas, as I feel it's better to personalise the ratings. Also, Excel can corrupt DBF files.

no u getting the wrong idea andrew, i mean use excel to get the ratings and then just enter them into what ever editor u use, this will save you so much time, but of course i can understand you not using this type of system as stats might not directly link to ratings but for many of the stats it may be useful and gives accurate player ratings......

im just trying to come up with ideas

It's not a bad idea, but I prefer to use the default rating system, and personalise the ratings based on the player.
