Daft question, but how do I install patches?

Guys,
Excuse my ignorance here and apologies if there are instructions posted elsewhere but how do you install certain patches...like the arena updates or cyberfaces that don't come with installation batch files...do I need some utility to import these (like GFXPAK for NHL)...

Any help appreciated.
